Did you know that the Romans' favourite went ?

Besides honey & grape juice, meals in were flavoured with imported dates from Judea ().

Date palm fronds were symbolic of - lawyers pinned them to their doors & generals wore special "toga palmata".

Judean dates were also shelf-stable & delicious.

Sadly, by the 19th c., they had vanished.

Except for a few 2000-year-old seeds.

They were successfully germinated in 2020.

Serious vibes in the series finale of . I’m not an educated classicist and I know they had to change things for the show and its collapsing budget by this point, but I’m a bit skeptical that the real story was like this.

No wonder people see this show as a precursor to Game of Thrones - I may get round to watching that. I’ll have to rewatch season 1 later.

I also just bought Ten Caesars and will read it soon.

Are the gods Idle or active? Do they exist at all? How much can we ever know about them? Find out for yourself in this hot new dialogue from Cicero! Conclusions will not be reached and the question will be left open!

Good piece on these mysterious Roman dodecahedrons. More than 100 of these have been found around Europe and no one really knows what they were used for. More tests are being done on them. They're metal, and have survived undamaged for over 1700 years 🤯

Cool november Sunday visiting Rome with dear @Lucatermite and @claus61. The wish was to go places a little unusual, possibly quiet and evocative; we started then with the Aventine Hill. The view from its slopes is one of the most famous in the world: Palatine Hill, hovering over the Circus Maximus.

Been watching some older such as Cleopatra from 1963 and Ben Hur.

It's a really nice change of pace (quite literally). Movies are slower, take more time, show things and thanks to the practical effects, hold up well. I also like how "fit" and "attractive" characters were just people rather than dehydrated steroid recepticles.

I was surprised how great Cleopatra was. Very close to the amazing depcition of that time period in the marvellous by

365 German security & police forces sealed off the ghetto. 1,259 people were detained, comprising 363 men, 689 women, and 207 children. Afterwards, non-Jewish people were released while the Jews were detained at the Collegio militare in the Palazzo Salviati in Trastevere.

Two days later, a transport of 1,035 Jews left Tiburtina station and left towards Auschwitz.

Only fifteen men and one woman survived the war.
