Pondering to program a very old-school ad system for my blog. Like VERY old-school. A directory with banner ads as static graphic files, PNG only. A plugin for Jekyll to randomly select banner ads when regenerating the site. That's all. No cookies, no tracking, no targeting, no JavaScript, no nothing. Just banner ads with a clickable URL. Bring back the old web :)
Occasionally I have heard Fediversians talk about reviving #webRings. Web rings had some serious problems. No protocol for inclusion, no sense of how big they are, no anchor text (just click "next" and see what you get)…
What about a #RingWeb? The Ring Web is a web of web rings!
A #WebRing should be a thing. To make the ring a thing, a collection of people (or #Fedi instances) could run some one-liner that does a worse-is-better style synchronization with regard to what defines the ring. That way you know what thing the ring is.
These ring things should be at-a-glance simple, delete themselves on abuse, and super easily reinstantiate with most of the same members.
I think this could be the beginning of a truly #polycentric architecture.
in the last couple weeks I find my thoughts going back to the concept of "rings" as in, web rings.
The ring paradigm: there's a left and a right. Limited options give you a sense of being in a place. The ring is like a room. It's big enough to explore, but probably small enough that you could explore enough of it to feel like you know it.
Moreover, the ring disintermediates community membership. To join, you just need neighbors. You need someone to link to you. The agency to choose neighbors is unique to the #webRing concept, afaict.
I've started a new #webring using my tool! Most existing webrings are geek oriented, for folks into retro computing or small web stuff etc. So I'm doing something a little different.
It's called Ghostring! It's for #horror and #SFF enthusiasts, anyone with mysterious #witch vibes, or perhaps anyone who's an actual #ghost or other nonhuman creature? (it's not strict)
If you run a personal #blog or #website, I'd love to list you on the webring. Send me your site info! Let's connect!

The more I get into the blogging mindset, the less I post on social media. It is really weird, that I gifted so many thoughts of the last over 10 years to a platform owner who made money out of it. That is no more. My blog will stay ad free forever. The only tracking I do is cookie-free and respects the do-not-track-header and self hosted. So I guess @pfefferle and @matthiasott, you were right. Blogging it is.
Archaeo.social now offers a #webring for #archaeologists (and not only)! This is a tiny funny thing from the old web and it might be a good way to discover and keeping a list of #archaeology blogs and websites. Thanks to @joeroe for supporting this idea and implementing it :) (and thanks to @amolith for the go-webring)
Now, everyone's links are still pointing at the old URL, which is fine, that will continue to work forever, but if you get a chance (maybe when next adding new content) it would be nice to change to the new one, it doesn't have my name in it!
So for some reason I just stumbled upon webrings and I think I'm in love  :blog: :website: I'm finding so many blogs and following their RSS feeds.
Today I got a basic #webring working to connect my website with the sites of a couple of my art friends!
After I work out the look of the widget, I'd like to make a few connecting sites with similar content. Right now I'm thinking one for #scifi art & maybe #worldbuilding projects. If you're interested in joining one of these, let me know! #indieWeb#smallWeb
