'Well, the Bible says...'

No, I don't care. This book was written a LONG time ago by idiot sheep-fuckers who didn't know where the sun went at night. The fact that you use it as your moral compass should qualify as a mental disorder, honestly. Also, what does the bible say about shellfish? What does it say about slaves? Why do you get to pick and choose what parts of the bible are important and make FUCKIN' LAWS that affect rational humans? The absolute narcissism on you people. 🙄

Believing in Dawkins: The New Spiritual Atheism by Eric Steinhart, 2020

In this book, atheist philosopher Eric Steinhart explores the spiritual dimensions of Richard Dawkins’ books, which are shown to encompass:
· the meaning and purpose of life
· an appreciation of Platonic beauty and truth
· a deep belief in the rationality of the universe
· an aversion to both scientism and nihilism

I often feel like the odd one out, believing in something I call God, among secular technologists. I see most #atheism as a rejection of modern dualistic Christian culture. Fine: I've literally no ties to Christianity. Neither am I New Age, though I do think they are a bit closer to the Truth in referring to God as The Universe. Doesn't matter exactly what you call It. Mystics of all origins in all geographies will tell you the limits of names.

I have never, not one time here on fedi, gotten a post across my feed that told me I was stupid or even misguided for not being of a particular religion. It hasn't happened even one time and I looked up hashtags, I follow some Christians apparently. Some Muslims too. Probably other believers I'm sure, and atheists as well.

I have gotten hundreds of posts on my feed saying basically that, just, because I'm not an atheist. They direct their vitriol to anyone who isn't an atheist simply in the words they choose. Look at this very thread for a clear example, go all the way back to the top.

To be fair, most of them came from this one user, they're a particularly immature person. But certainly not all of em.

Just compare hashtags. vs vs whatever else you choose. There's ten times as much atheist chatter than there is Christian chatter.

Rep. Jamie Raskin, co-chair of the Congressional Freethought Caucus, has once again proposed a National Day of Reason resolution as a counter to the National Day of Prayer. The resolution celebrates Saturday, May 4, 2024, as a National Day of Reason and urges Americans to focus on the importance of reason, critical thought, the scientific method and free inquiry to resolve problems rather than turning to religion.

(The House will not approve this, but let's do it anyway) #FFRF #atheism

Humanity will always strive to create god.

We do it because lets us not accept responsibility of our own actions ourselves.

Any kind will do, as long as we don’t have to look in the hard mirror of ourselves directly.

Today, technology is the canvas we’re painting our need of a god on.

Proud atheists happily building a god for themselves. What a sight to behold!

I can't think of many things more counterproductive than . It's even worse than people deciding to do nothing because at least the clear display of apathy towards an issue could influence people who do care to take action, but if everyone is convinced that prayer works (which it doesn't) then what motivation would they have to do anything themselves if they believe they can solve their problems through magical incantations?

Or like Issac Asimov said perhaps, "Properly read, the Bible is the most potent force for atheism ever conceived."

David Frost asked him if he had tried to find God. He replied that he hadn't given it much thought. Frost was incredulous. Asimov responded, “God is much more intelligent than I am — let him try to find me.”

I also like his argument for why he goes by the "label" of being a rationalist as opposed to an atheist too.
