🌌 On this day in 1978 the very first episode of the very first version of Douglas Adams' The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy went out on Radio 4. We can't tell you how proud that makes us.
Here's a lovely programme about Douglas and his creation, presented by his friend John Lloyd, that went out on the 40th anniversary.
3 people in my bookclub really enjoy reading erotica. To each their own, it’s simply not my thing. My question, & I don’t want to come across as condescending, are there any books of this genre that are well-written? I get there will be a lot of gratuitous stuff, but is that all there is to these books? Years ago, another bookclub I was in read the 1st book in the Sleeping Beauty series by Anne Rice (she wrote these under a different name) & I couldn’t finish it, I thought it was ridiculous.
Hey everyone!
Over the past few years, I've been on a reading spree and picked up some tricks along the way that have been total game-changers for me.
If you're looking to read more this year, I've spilled all my secrets in my latest blog post. I hope you find them as helpful as I did! 📚 😊
What’s everyone reading? I’ve officially finished every Agatha Christie novel, and am looking for someone like her! Have read all the Dick Francis and Dorothy Sayers books too. Any suggestions? #mystery#mysterybooks#books#bookclub
It's Ladies #BookClub night, and Jane is hosting. It used to be an open book club, but after one of the husband's tried to join it was quickly renamed Ladies Book Club.
I've been sent upstairs for the next 2 hours. I'm not sure 6 Ladies need four bottles of wine and a cooler full of beer, but what do I know. I wasn't allowed to join Ladies Book Club.
This month on #BowieBookClub we read ‘Darkness at Noon’ by Arthur Koestler, a tale of human pyschology under duress that makes a fitting conclusion to the Russian books that Bowie included on his reading list.
I only managed to read 5 books in 2022. My brain was just too broken to focus on words on a page. 😩 I'm hoping to change that in 2023.
I was finally able to pick up a book earlier this month. I devoured the beginning. Then my brain started to be an asshole, so the middle took a while to get through. But I devoured the ending over the past couple of days.
The Lincoln Highway, by Amor Towles. Three young men and a child, good hearts and bad parents, in a non-inclusive society. The story is told by each character in turn, in a pleasant, neat writing that I really enjoyed. The ending felt both surprising and inevitable somehow. According to my bookclub friends, not as good as A Gentleman in Moscow, but I liked it. #TheLincolnHighway#AmorTowles#bookclub@bookstodon
It’s only in the last few years I’ve been able to set a book down if I’m not into it/hate it /at the wrong time & place for it. Previously I felt almost guilty not to finish a book - like I was letting myself & the book down!
#BookClub choices I really try to finish, but hanging on to the grim end can often leave me with a reading block.
Berliners, we’re hosting a little book swap on Aug 11 in Kreuzberg: Bring a book that means something to you, leave with a new book to read, have good chats in between! https://www.meetup.com/unread-bookclub/events/294697250/ (please rsvp)
If a book called itself a "Tiny Book of [topic]", what would you expect from the tininess? Physical size, page count, content – and where goes your limit for "tiny" in those?
"Mystery interwined in a pioneering supernatural world. It can easily make a fantastic bestseller."

"As I reach the edge of the opening, my blood pressure is rising. Never have I seen something like this before."

4.13 Sentient Trains (out of 5) was a good score for The Terraformers by Annalee Newitz at @mcrscifi this evening. Next book is The Cries of Alaere by Barra Hart if anyone wants to join us - despite the Manchester name we meet online, 19:00 UK time third Tuesday of each month (except December).
