It took the catholic church over 200 years to admit Galileo Galilei was right, and another almost 150 years to apologise and lift the edict of the Inquisition. (in 1992)

You know, about saying the earth rotates around the sun instead of the other way around being formally heretical.

My Deep Hospitality Keynote, part of the Testimonies to Mercy series, is now available to watch online. It touches on community, acceptance, and real welcome. "This keynote knocked my socks off!" according to Michael Willett Newheart on Facebook.

My today is the Norsk Folkemuseum (or Norwegian Museum of Cultural History) at Bygdøy in Oslo, Norway. It's an open-air museum housing dozens of historical buildings relocated to this area for preservation, and home of the Gol Stave Church (circa 1200 CE), one of three stave churches we've now visited in Norway when travelling. Who doesn't love a stave church?

Interior of a medieval, wooden church, in the altar area. It's a windowless environment and the walls leading to the altar and curving around behind it are highly decorated with religious motifs and imagery from the bible. A small altar holds two candles to the bottom right of view.
An old building; probably a grain store as it's a wooden building raised up from the ground on a smaller wooden-timbered base. The building is approximately cube-shaped with a shallow, peaked roof, and from our angle on the ground looking slightly up at it we can just see tufts of grass peeking over the roof edges. The wood is dark, almost taking on a burnt look, and likely indicating treatment it's received over the years to protect it from the elements. Very small windows are set in the front face; five lower down, then two above, and all about the size of a head.
A field of tall grass dotted with wildflowers stretches across a short distance to a grouping of half a dozen old houses constructed on wooden beams and all with shallow roofs topped with grass. No two buildings are the same, with each adjacent building either lower or longer or squatter than its neighbours. Beyond the buildings some tall trees form a border under a grey, moody sky.

When it comes to the Right’s obsession with combating pedophilia and child molestation—the call is coming from inside the Church.

The people they trust to help them get into Heaven were molesting their children and covering it up for centuries.

The cognitive dissonance that one has to maintain in order to project like that is a good reminder that the road to atrocity is paved with good intentions.

Churches’ Role in Local Election Prompts Calls for Investigations

West rejected three conservative Christian candidates who sought to infuse religious values into local politics. But the campaign support the candidates received from local churches has prompted calls for state and federal probes.

I just read a pretty typical statement of beliefs from a fairly typical , and one thing that struck me is that most of it was pure tradition.

By which I mean that if we were to take seriously the very first paragraph (all about the absolute perfection and authority of the Bible), very little of the entire statement could be rigorously defended from the pages of that selfsame Bible.

And I think that's the neatest trick the church every pulled.

Ancient ruins, I love them. Stepping back in time, walking where others have walked but are no longer with us. Thought provoking #history. This is the Pecos ruins in New Mexico, adobe church or what is left of it. Fascinating history between the Pecos Indians and the Spanish.

Trio of Texas Churches Donated to Political Candidate Despite Clear IRS Prohibition

The law prohibits churches from endorsing political candidates, but in a City Council race already beset by claims of church electioneering, one candidate in said three made an honest mistake by donating to his campaign and that he is returning the money.

Not yet, but soon!
At Medieval ruin in hometown , May 31st 2016.
Edit: About the Church Ruin, info (in Norwegian) with many photos at:
https://www.visittelemark.no/skien/ting-a-gjore/kapitelberget-p500543
It's called Kapittelberget, was built as a private chapel for Bratsberg farm in the early 12th century, probably built by someone associated with the powerful Dagsätten and a possible builder may have been Dag Eilivsson or his son Gregorius Dagsson.
