Thinking about finding IT job in climate and today I started looking for area of monitoring of weather/climate disasters and following crisis response. What I have found, however, is climate risk modeling and predicting for companies to prepare / get insurance / mitigate, as well as emission accounting / estimation used to strategise how to lower them. Perhaps just govs&orgs work directly with disasters? Examples and pointers to such IT careers welcome #AskFedi#climate#crisis#disasters
"Big corporations, golf courses and hotels have been taking water from locals for years. Now the fire may result in even more devastating water theft."
"All over Maui, golf courses glisten emerald green, hotels manage to fill their pools and corporations stockpile water to sell to luxury estates. And yet, when it came time to fight the fires, some hoses ran dry. Why?"
"This is a classic case of the most craven disaster capitalism: a small elite group using a profound human tragedy as their window to roll back a hard-won grassroots victory for water rights, while removing civil servants who pose a political inconvenience to the administration’s pro-developer agenda."...

As I have said for year: #climatechange is #water change. Water or lack thereof is what impacts people the most, directly or indirectly. This is why being both a water scholar & a climate scholar makes me immediately wonder about histories & #geopolitics around water in all climate #disasters. #maui is an example.
"After a fire at their townhouse complex, a B.C. family flew to Maui — where wildfires are raging... “There wasn’t any communication,” she said. “Cellphone lines were down, there was nothing on the radio." Then at 11:45 p.m. they got an emergency notification on their cellphones that they were being evacuated to another shelter in Maui... She said all roads were closed, power lines were down, their phones weren’t working and there was no communication." #Disasters#Mauihttps://globalnews.ca/news/9886477/bc-family-townhouse-complex-fire-maui-wildfires-hurricane/
Current road closures in West Maui. No access to Lahaina, only emergency vehicles only allowed in at this time. Residents on the West side are being asked to shelter in place if can.
Part 5:
About 2,000 travelers from canceled and arriving flights Tuesday were sheltered overnight at Kahului Airport, while plans were underway for transporting them off island.
People trying to locate loved ones who may be impacted by the fires can call the American Red Cross hotline at 1-800-733-2767.
Sent my drone up briefly to have a quick look at what things are looking like. It is important to keep the drone low and get up/down very fast to prevent any interference with ongoing firefighting efforts. Things are very smoky here in Central/South Maui. Multiple hotspots are still smoldering and with the wind the way it is right now, flareups are likely inevitable. Lots of smoke visible coming from the West side.
The latest VIIRS data from EOSDIS is showing the extent of the current fires here on Maui as of this morning. There are still active fires in Lahaina, upper and lower Kula, and Central Maui in the foothills.
Stolen from Facebook. The harbor area of Lahaina including the famous Front Street has been leveled. The whole area is gone. Today there is no cell service or power in the Lahaina area so good information about impact and severity is hard to come by at the moment. Winds are still howling today so nobody it out of the woods yet.
A good reminder: Disaster preparedness is certainly important, but post-disaster recovery planning, including waste management, is also important (but often overlooked).
This Temblor article indicates that among U.S. states, WA is better prepared to deal with post-disaster waste management.
