I'm setting up a #mastodon server for @IronChefOfMusic . The goal is to a) learn more about #Fediverse admin. b) create a place anyone can post remixes without having to create an account on #drupal. c) archive the existing Drupal site to static so I don't need to maintain it!
The original Kracfive #ironchefofmusic site just had chefs upload to FTP or pass around a USB stick. I think there was also a simple upload form. I'll add a form, too, for people who don't want to create an account 👨🍳👩🍳🧑🍳🥔🥦🥕
Experimenting with streaming setups this week, mostly #Minecraft and a few #ClassicMac games like Lode Runner. Lag issues aren't really going away, although the bitrate tweaks I made a while back are helping. The other thing that's still an issue is finding a happy balance for stream audio. I've been using #Funkwhale to stream playlists of #CreativeCommons music in the background, but individual tracks sometimes drown out my voice. Compressor needed? 😕
In case you weren't aware, I've been working with the #funkwhale project for over 5 years at this point. I first installed the software back in 2018 and started helping out people who wanted to install it, then I got involved with writing frontend code and documentation. It's no exaggeration to say I owe my entire career to the work I've done on the project. I wrote about this a bit in my blog a while back.
what I'd love to see is #funkwhale also support basic posts ala #mastodon. I bet we could get a pretty cool pod going at ccmusic.social if this was the case. #ccmusic
#funkwhale 1.4.0 is on the way! We have some translations that are nearly complete, but we need some help getting them over the finish line.
If you have the time and are a speaker of Occitan, Dutch, Chinese (Simplified), Italian, Polish, Basque, Japanese, or Portuguese (Brazil), we'd really appreciate your help getting our translation strings to 100%
WOOOW. You guys. LOOK. What a sign. The #music signs are SIGNING.
I step out of emergency dental surgery (a toot for another day), and jump back into learning more about #icecast and #funkwhale. I immediately receive notification from nameless site, which alerts me to my friend leaving this very crucial comment on another friends post regarding #SpotifyWrapped and their underpayment of #musicians:
HOLD TIGHT YOU GUYS. I’M BRINGING THE LA UNDERGROUND LEGENDS.
I see some people posting #SpotifyWrapped updates again. I do still occasionally use spotify, but I mainly just run my own music streaming service. using #funkwhale
I don't have stats on my specific usage (or any of the other 40+ users that are on my pod) , but the overall stats are rather nice. My pod is open to all users no account necessary unless you want to upload your own library.
Funkwhale has some issues handling artists, particularly in classical music.
I love the idea of Funkwhale, and I have been trying it out for a little while now. I've tried uploading Rachmaninoff's Piano Concerto No. 2, but I stumbled across a few issues, particularly regarding artists.
The first thing that I noticed was that artists separated by commas get merged into one "artist". In my case, "Sviatoslav Richter, Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra" was registered as one single person. I'm guessing there is some workaround for this, but since comma separation is a widely used format, you're bound to get a lot of double artists.
Another thing I noticed was that composers and conductors don't get registered as artists. That is quite annoying, because the composer is the one you care the most about in classical music. Even when I go into the track details, I see no Sergei Rachmaninov or Stanisław Wisłocki, even though they're clearly tagged in the files.
Then, a smaller issue is different spellings for the same name: JS Bach and Johann Sebastian Bach are shown as two different artists. I understand that it is difficult to prevent given the decentralised nature of Funkwhale, but some form of reminder to keep it to some standard would be nice (perhaps the one used on Discogs).
Overall, Funkwhale is a great idea and I am going to use the hell out of it, but it needs some standarisation and support for multiple contributors.
#Funkwhale
Danke Dir!
