I’m probably the last person to hear about it but I just stumbled on #Funkwhale in my search for a #Spotify alternative.
It’s #foss, #decentralised, and #federated! You can share #music by joinings pods or starting your own. Now I’ve only just discovered it but this feels like a much more #community driven listening experience than what we’re use to these days. Kind of like sharing your walkman earphones at recess with friends.

@wagtail its a great idea as it would make potentially any django / wagtail installation a first class citizen of the fediverse, expanding functionality in various novel ways
There are already several django based activitypub servers (I am aware of #funkwhale, #takahẽ , #socialhome) and related #python projects (#bovine, #piefed) but it seems there is zero code re-use among them.

Anyone know of a fedi or at least free-ish alternative to SoundCloud? I like posting my stuff for archival and for whatever folks might enjoy listening to my brand of self indulgent improv, but I just have no desire to engage with that site anymore. What are the cool Indieweb kids using these days?
Are you thinking of self hosting, or signing up for a music service of some kind?
For self hosting there's #funkwhale, which has fediverse integration built in. I tried it myself and it didn't quite fit for me though.
A lot of musicians on here really like self hosting with #faircamp (and I use it myself and think it's great) but faircamp doesn't have activitypub, so there's no fediverse integration.
I'm looking into #ActivityPub platforms to share music on, and it seems like only #Funkwhale does that. But to be honest it does seem a little confusing to new users for me. I wonder if anyone's using #Peertube for audio files/music and what's their experience. Its youtube-like interface seems far more familiar to me, and I still mostly listen to music on youtube tbh (never made a spotify account). Any thoughts/suggestions welcome, thanks.

What are people using for #SoundCloud alternatives? I don't need distro or anything else, just a place to host audio where people can easily stream it. I'm game to host my own, if setting it up isn't a huge pain.

Thanks to a recommendation by @ophiocephalic, I am moving my music to tarrenvane@audio.liberta.vip, a #FunkWhale pod. My first channel, communitysongs@audio.liberta.vip, will feature the songs I've written for community song circles, which are also suitable as "pocket songs", songs to use for meditation, affirmation, etc.
#Funkwhale: dopo l'ultimo aggiornamento è diventato instabile e spesso diventa irraggiungibile, stiamo lavorando in 2 direzioni: lo spostamento su un altro server e la creazione di un'alternativa più adatta per i podcast (castopod).
#Invidious i.devol.it è stato colpito da youtube con un blocco a livello di server e quindi nonostante gli aggiornamenti è stato reso inutilizzabile.
Consigliamo una delle molte alternative:
what role does a label play today, as opposed to an indie streamer or curator? how do we keep pushing musicians to release their work as #creativecommons? should something like a ccmusic.social fedi server exist? any experience with #funkwhale? (I'd like it to evolve into a #Spotify + #bandcamp replacement)
we still now have some paywalls and ads. and corporate overlords. I feel like #funkwhale might be able to solve this, but we have to find a solution to get artists paid automatically when you play their work. that should be possible.
