is an app trying to play nice with the Fediverse while attempting to keep all of its corporate shenanigans intact, and keep full control out of the people's hands. Typical.

There's this other place, actually many other places. It's called the where you are not funneled into corporate algorithms and have full control of what you want to see.

The Fediverse is thousands of instances/apps of: and so much more.

Choosing your own content is so much better than having it chosen for you.

You still use email, right? That's how users in the are addressed with an extra @ at the front. But if you are capable of addressing, you can do user addressing on etc.
It's always @user - the simple magic of .

I just updated my @funkwhale instance to 1.3.0. There was a lot of work done in the background and the docker setup is very clean now. And of course the new version already is in https://github.com/mother-of-all-self-hosting/mash-playbook

Screenshot of a post by blender at video.blender.org (peertube) with the following content "BLENDERHEADS - Ep. 2 https://video.blender.org/videos/watch/c88ce617-0467-4841-95d7-170119291337". The screenshot showcases that Tuba shows a big preview card (since it's a video) with the video thumbnail at the top and the video title and platform at the bottom. The thumbnail has a "play" icon at its center.
Screenshot of Tuba's BookWyrm page in dark mode. The active book is "Some Desperate Glory" by Emily Tesh. The book cover, title, description and ISBN are visible, as well as two button with the labels "BookWyrm" and "OpenLibrary".
Screenshot of Tuba's media viewer in dark mode. The visible media is a picture of some sunflowers zoomed in. This screenshot showcases that Tuba can now zoom and pan images as well as that its layout is similar to Loupe's with the zoom in/out buttons at the bottom right and the carousel arrows at the bottom left.

List of fedi platforms I have tried/use in no particular order:

  • Probably most of you reading this is using it, but overall it's a fairly user friendly platform and has gotten people into the fediverse

  • Tbh haven't used it much but it seems like it has good potential
Not my kind of thing, but for those who like things more like instagram I'd check it out

  • What I'm currently using, I really like it so far
    It's beautiful and feature-rich

  • I use it occasionally as it has some media I do enjoy, but I do wish more people would upload to it

  • Same issue with peertube, not having many people upload
Also felt kinda wonky to work with but may have been the instances I tried

I would like to end this by saying, try new things on fedi
It helps keep the ecosystem healthy and you may find something you like more

The more I use different apps, the more I feel that we are on the edge of a different future, in the early stages of something that we haven't seen before.

In the last few months, I've used , , , , , , and . Soon, I'm going to try an install of . In the not too distant future, we will see bringing more options for video chat to the Fediverse. There are countless more platforms that I haven't had a chance to try.

The network formed by the interconnections between those apps is the Fediverse; a Federated Universe. Federated, because everything out there is connected with everything else, in one giant network. What I am truly beginning to appreciate is just how real that vision is, and just how disruptive to our future it's going to be. More than a truism, these the fediverse platforms really will allow us to see and interact with nearly anything else out there.

The platform we use no longer determines the information we can access; it doesn't build walls around us. Instead, what out choice of platform determines, is how we interact with information, rather than determining what information we are able interact with in the first place. The walls in the walled garden haven't so much been torn down, as simply never built.

I can write a blog post, and someone on Mastodon can reply to it. I can make a group post on lemmy, and someone from Calckey can reply to it. I can see an awesome photo on Pixelfed, bring it in to and boost it for everyone else to see. And then anyone who sees it can interact with it.

The cross platform interactions are still imperfect. Standards are still being developed, code is still being written and features are still being defined, but the future is right here, we are on the cusp of something new and amazing.

Of course, this is all old news to someone who has been part of the fediverse for years now, but it feels different now. The momentum is here, we are seeing a shift and I think once we cross that precipice, once we have normalised the cross channel interactions we are starting to develop, it's going to be very hard to go back.

Honestly, I can't wait.
