@adamchainz@paulox there are several django based instances, i think #funkwhale is another. But as far as i can tell alot is still in alpha and none has seen significant adoption. Its a bit of a pity. With the large numbers of python enthousiasts and contributors such a stack could made a difference for building out the #fediverse
What are people using for #SoundCloud alternatives? I don't need distro or anything else, just a place to host audio where people can easily stream it. I'm game to host my own, if setting it up isn't a huge pain.
More and more I'm finding SC to be a magnet for spammers and scammers, and I'm looking for an out.
@wagtail its a great idea as it would make potentially any django / wagtail installation a first class citizen of the fediverse, expanding functionality in various novel ways
There are already several django based activitypub servers (I am aware of #funkwhale, #takahẽ , #socialhome) and related #python projects (#bovine, #piefed) but it seems there is zero code re-use among them.
have you played with #funkwhale at all? it's a nice base imo. I wish they'd try to be a decentralized mashup of #mastodon, #bandcamp and #spotify. a place for artists to both get their music promoted on the #fediverse, post/control their music but also a way to get paid for downloads and streams. let labels run servers or have artists do it themselves, sites that can double as their public website. all while letting fans follow, listen and share on any compatible app. #ccmusic
Anyone know of a fedi or at least free-ish alternative to SoundCloud? I like posting my stuff for archival and for whatever folks might enjoy listening to my brand of self indulgent improv, but I just have no desire to engage with that site anymore. What are the cool Indieweb kids using these days?
Are you thinking of self hosting, or signing up for a music service of some kind?
For self hosting there's #funkwhale, which has fediverse integration built in. I tried it myself and it didn't quite fit for me though.
A lot of musicians on here really like self hosting with #faircamp (and I use it myself and think it's great) but faircamp doesn't have activitypub, so there's no fediverse integration.
I would love to see open podcast projects such as @AntennaPod and @kasts integrate with a FOSS, decentralized protocol like ActivityPub for efficient podcast syncing between platforms. Does such a thing exist now?
@beunice@AntennaPod We're already working on this. Both #AntennaPod and #Kasts are involved in openpodcastapi.org together with other projects like #FunkWhale It's still in the process of specification at the moment.
#Funkwhale è un'istanza audio completamente gratuita della comunità di #MastodonUno ed è accessibile a tutti, chiunque può iscriversi e caricare le proprie opere.
Per i podcast consigliamo però https://castopod.it.
Thanks to a recommendation by @ophiocephalic, I am moving my music to tarrenvane@audio.liberta.vip, a #FunkWhale pod. My first channel, communitysongs@audio.liberta.vip, will feature the songs I've written for community song circles, which are also suitable as "pocket songs", songs to use for meditation, affirmation, etc.
You want the "play any song immediately" experience. Musicians want to go viral, control their work and get paid enough to make it their full time job. We should be able to do this with #Funkwhale, redirecting the share that goes to corporations like labels and #Spotify, directly to artists.
It's time for part 2 of our short series of posts about our plans for the future of #funkwhale. Last week, we talked a bit about our plans for a new API. While that's fun for developers and tech enthusiasts, most users are more interested in how Funkwhale as an application is going to improve. Let's talk about that now.
Since I just moved here and I think I never introduced myself, its probably time for an #introduction:
Hi, I am Georg. I am currently living in #Leipzig, #Germany. I spent most of my time working on #Funkwhale and related open source projects. I am also spending quite some time #gardening and enjoying or making #music. I am living in a hetero-normative family with two kids, which hides my light queerness (still trying to figure it out...).
It's time for part 3 of our short series of posts about our plans for the future of #funkwhale. Last week, we talked a bit about our plans for a new Funkwhale app. A new app and a new API are both great, but let's not forget what sets Funkwhale apart from other media platforms: federation. It's something we really want to start expanding, so let's talk about it for a while.
