Today in Labor History February 24, 1895: Revolution broke out in Baire, near Santiago de Cuba. This was the beginning of the Cuban War of Independence (1895-1898). The liberation war ended with the Spanish-American War and the U.S. taking Cuba as a colony. Some of the more well-known commanders of the Cuban revolution were the poet Jose Marti (composer of “Guantanamera”) and Antonio Maceo, the Titan of Bronze.
Just read this as a result of another toot. Brilliantly inclusive and sensible. I would vote for Scottish independence just to see this in place instead of the current Draconian system run by the Home Office.
Tories and Labour hate Scotland more than anything else on the planet. And that means they’re willing to side with foreign enemies, dictators, oligarchs and anyone else, which leaves the UK vulnerable and wide open to outside manipulation. That is the Westminster legacy. The Tories have become the party of hatred and revenge…they don’t legislate to improve our country. They only block and destroy anything that Scotland does to try to make our Country a better place. #youyesyet#independence
Maybe, just maybe, the absolute corruption and incompetence of Westminster revealed today may convince a few more Scots that, yes, of course independence has risks, but it offers freedom from this superannuated old boys club. #IndependenceIsNormal#independence#Scotland#scottishindependence
Give the NY Times credit, they've nailed conservative Britain. See below this is what all Americans think of Britain and we unfortunately get tarred by the same brush. Labour won’t be any better. It’s time to wake up Scotland and fight for our country. WE NEED OUR #independence are #youyesyet ?
@jonburr@Vonskinnback@TCMuffin@Wen@benroyce@Funwithphotos I have loads of English friends and also family which live there. It’s not about the people it’s about the government and the corruption. They have ruined the UK and there is no coming back from this. #independence is the only way to save our Country for our children. Alas it’s too late for us. (At my age 🙄)
We've got the land, we've got the water, we've got the oil, we've got the gas and we've got renewable energy coming out of our ears!
So why do we tolerate the scandal of fuel-poor Scots living in energy-rich Scotland?
When is enough ENOUGH? Alba and SNP MUST STICK together for the sake of our Country #youyesyet#snp#alba it’s #independence before party. #SunakOut#StarmerOut
Unelected MSP Stephen Kerr should be held to account for his Expenses claims which is

Today, for Black History Month, we remember events of February 6, 1694: When the Brazilian authorities captured Dandara, warrior queen of the runaway slaves in Quilombo dos Palmares. She committed suicide to avoid being forced back into slavery. Quilombo dos Palmares was a community of Afro-Brazilian people who freed themselves from enslavement. The community survived for nearly 90 years, with up to 30,000 residents, before the government finally suppressed it in 1694. Members of the community would raid plantations, slaughter the owners and free the slaves to come join them in Palmares. They used guerilla warfare, using weapons obtained from Portuguese traders and, possibly, capoeira.
As a young girl, Dandara joined a group of Afro-Brazilians to fight against slavery in Brazil. As an adult, she helped create military strategies to protect Palmares. She played an important role in making her husband, Zumbi dos Palmares, cut ties with his uncle Ganga-Zumba, who was the first big chief of Quilombo dos Palmares. In 1678, Ganga-Zumba signed a peace treaty with the government. All those born in Palmares were to be free and given permission to engage in commerce. However, in exchange, they had to stop giving refuge to runaway slaves and collaborate with the Portuguese authorities in arresting runaways. Dandara and Zumbi opposed the deal because it did not end slavery and made Palmares complicit in its perpetuation.
The story of Zumbi, Dandara and the Quilombo do Palmares is depicted in the truly superb 1984 film “Quilombo,” directed by Carlos Diegues, with music by Gilberto Gil.
It's becoming clearer by the day that the #Labour party under #Starmer are intending to step straight into #Tory shoes. All one can hope for is that #BlueLabour are slightly less corrupt and mendacious than their predecessors.
#Scotland doesn't support either of the disUK's Westminster-centric FPTP options, so I long for #independence to allow democratic choice of government for our country.
“I think almost all the time decisions were made in the public health benefit of the people of Scotland but I think the Scottish Government believed that its handling of these matters was somehow superior to that of the UK Government and that people would appreciate that and be prompted to think how much better might life be if we gave the Scottish Government more powers and moved further down the path towards independence.”
Breaking: Nicola Sturgeon urged to apologise after leaked WhatsApp messages describing Boris Johnson as “Fcuking clown” Matt Hancock as “Weaker than a nuns piss,” Liz Truss as “About as much use as a marzipan dildo,” and referring to Suella Braverman as “Shitler.”.. Apologise? She should be knighted.. 🏴 #youyesyet#independence#SunakOut
Today in Labor History January 21, 1919: Members of the Irish Volunteers ambushed Royal Irish Constabulary (RIC) officers in the Soloheadbeg ambush. The RIC were escorting a consignment of gelignite explosives at Soloheadbeg, County Tipperary. The IRA killed two RIC officers in the ambush and seized all their weapons and the explosives. Gelignite was invented in 1875, by Alfred Nobel, that infamous proponent of peace. For more on Nobel’s ignoble history, you can read my article, “The Merchant of Death” https://marshalllawwriter.com/the-merchant-of-death/
“The quest for Palestinian statehood is a just cause … That is why a Labour government will work with international partners to recognise the state of Palestine.”
Isn’t it interesting that Labour so firmly believes in the right of Palestine to be an independent state… but not so Scotland. 🤔
Unless of course you live in Scotland, Wales or NI. London columnists really need to get out more of feck right off. Labour come second in the worst result, after the Conservatives and LibDums.
One more remark on yesterday's #elections in #Taiwan: I read a lot of comments from folks furious at #Biden for his statement that the #UnitedStates do not support Taiwan's #independence.
Biden's statement is perfectly consistent and in-line with long-standing US position and policy known as the #ThreeNoes:
no to independence of Taiwan
no to unilateral changes of the status quo
no to violence or annexation
If you want to be angry at someone, let that be #Nixon and #Kissinger.
Reality is a bitter pill when you’ve been fed a steady diet of religious fantasy. While life always was random, I felt safer when I could explain it as “God’s will” or “Satan’s handiwork.” I felt extremely exposed & vulnerable without my Cosmic Big Brother watching over me. Step by step, I learned to own my life. Divorcing religion is painful - but it’s also liberating. I love my life ♥️ #independence#criticalthinking#identity#reality#science#equality#reason#SecularHumanism#atheist#joy
