Today in Labor History November 3, 1929: The Gwangju Student Independence Movement against Japanese rule began. Over 50,000 people participated. It inspired protests in Manchuria, Shanghai, Beijing, Japan and the U.S. In 1980, Gwangju students rose up against military rule. The Korean government responded by shooting and killing over 2,000.

@TonyStark An important article, but there's one aspect that's not mentioned at all: The #British Mandate for the "establishment in #Palestine of a national home for the Jewish people" was opposed violently by the arab population, but the not-yet independent Israel fought back. Britain, as de-facto colonial power tried to maintain control and #Haganah had to fight them, too - until the British withdrew.
