It may have been in continual use as a burial place since St Columba's day, nearly 15 centuries ago. More pics and info: https://www.undiscoveredscotland.co.uk/iona/storanschapel/index.html

It’s best to avoid taking things away from Uluru (Australia), Pompeii (Italy), Iona (Scotland), Mauna Kea (Hawaii), or any other revered site.

Flyover over the island of using QGIS and Blender, starting above Sligneach and flying roughly north, ending just past the Abbey/Nunnery.

In compositing, ran normalized depth map through a Kirsch filter at 50%. This gives the fog-like effect (and gradients are low frequency, so it compresses down really well).

Data from https://remotesensingdata.gov.scot/ (had to reduce resolution a lot for my GPU... original DSM is 25cm)

a flyover animation over the easy coast of Iona. There is a foggy effect, and edges are picked out as white lines. We fly over a row of cottages, a small coastal village and finally fly over the abbey.

Just back from visiting friends who live at the very bottom of this path. It’s a bit of a hike with supplies and an enthusiastic puppy. But boy is it worth it for the views! ( just visible)

Rather chilly up on Iona, I'm here at the famous church of St.Cuthbert.
A very special place full of mystic vibes, you can feel the essence of this place in the air, goosebumps time.
Then the mist & wind came over and it's starting to snow 😳🌨️❄️

kaolinite vs zircon Two beautifully-named minerals, but one is white crud, while the other sparkles and glows! Here's some zircons (up to 8mm long) from ultramafic Lewisian rocks in Iona, fluorescing golden yellow under 254nm ultraviolet light. 🥰 🤩

Some nice beach boulders from during yesterday's wet and murky fieldwork in Iona with PhD student Kang. Two mylonized somethings (left and right) and a gneiss (centre) sitting on garnet-pyroxene meta-ironstone in the rain 😊

FaithfullJohn,

... and also from yesterday, here's a wee handful of proper Iona greenstones: pebbles of Lewisian serpentine marble. There is a lovely range of textures and colours in these marbles. I never get tired of them 🥰 🤩 😊
