Colors of the dunes - yes from a distance it looks like all sand, pines, and oaks, but up close we have a wonderful world of enchantment.

This is trying hard to look part-, part-human! 😂 Check out the thick (legs/arms/tentacles?) draped over the large boulder, like the tree is sitting up. Passed this while last week in the White , .

You know lichens are out there, right? Algae and fungi - two entirely separate kingdoms of life! - living weird, entangled mutually beneficial lives on all manner of surfaces, no doubt plotting something both beautiful and nefarious. What a world.

My photo of the day, a White-crowned sparrow on a rock with various lichens.

atriverside, to random

This flowering cherry was planted in 1974, so it's 50+ years old this Spring.

There's quite a collection of colorful lichen and/or fungus on this tree - please forgive the blurry red one! The yellow one failed to pass editorial muster altogether, alas. (will try again on another day)

Fruiting bodies rising from this moss nestled into the top of a pale blue green lichen
Not as crisp as I would have liked but this photo of a bright red lichen or fungus
Two deeply cut holes in one of the cherry tree branches lead me to believe this is woodpecker work. Below the two holes are some pale blue gray lichen

The broken head of this tombstone must have lain face down in the grass for years before someone reunited it with its base - the difference in erosion and lichen growth is almost as striking as the artwork.

Found this apparently completely dried piece of lichen on a rock, scattered by black bears when foraging.
I took it home, watered it all over, and put it in a small cup.
The second photo, taken 24 hours after watering, shows how quickly lichens and mosses recover after a rain.
