Ranger Sarah has arrived at Agate Fossil Beds National Monument in Nebraska. Known for a large number of well-preserved Miocene fossils. Fossils from the Harrison Formation and Anderson Ranch Formation, which date to the Arikareean in the North American land mammal classification, about 20 to 16.3 million years ago, are among some of the best specimens of Miocene mammals.

Ranger Sarah has spotted a short-horned lizard, sometimes called the horny toad. Can you see it, it blends in perfectly with the rocks behind it. This little guy is commonly sited around the rocks near the Fossil Hills trail. Short-horned lizards are between two and six inches long with pointy spines on their head and body.

I bet one of you will please be able to tell me, what is this part of a reptile's anatomy called? And what is it, a flap of skin, a blood vessel, something else?

I’m pretty sure these are just our regular alligator lizards here in So. California but have never seen one so dark before. Anyone know why or if it’s a different breed? Thanks

Eastern water skink, Eulamprus quoyii. This little guy was hiding under a large loose piece of bark - I wasn't expecting to see him there!

Spotted a small lizard in the kitchen this evening, and managed to catch it so I could release it outside. Hard to get good photos with a phone camera since it was so small and the lighting wasn't great, but I think I got a clear enough look to identify it with the help of the field guide. I reckon it's a Weasel Skink, Saproscincus mistelinus, which would make it a widespread but not frequently seen lizard.

Photo of a small reddish brown skink with pale spots on its back and a pale spot just behind its eye.

“It really ties the room together.”

Calcifer’s grown a lot since November. She enjoys hopping over precarious gaps and still isn’t sure about the lights in the living room ceiling because they look like giant eyes.

Whether you call them gliding lizards or flying dragons or something else, Draco are pretty darn cool. This is a Five-banded Flying Dragon (Draco quinquefasciatus) in southern Thailand, with gliding surfaces partially extended. I've seen a few of them glide from tree to tree, but I haven't photographed that yet.
