#EU#EC#Cybersecurity#Messaging#Encryption: "Today, noyb filed a complaint against the EU Commission’s Directorate General for Migration and Home Affairs. In September 2023, the Commission used unlawful micro-targeting on Twitter (X) to promote its heavily criticized chat control regulation. It seems that the Commission was desperate to garner public support, which could be used to pressure national governments into accepting the controversial legislative proposal. This move both undermined the established democratic procedures between EU institutions and violated the EU GDPR."
#EU#Cybersecurity#Privacy#Encryption#HumanRights#Messaging: "On 14th November, Members of the European Parliament’s ‘Civil Liberties’ committee voted against attempts from EU Home Affairs officials to roll out mass scanning of private and encrypted messages across Europe. It was a clear-cut vote, with a significant majority of MEPs supporting the proposed position.
A political deal struck by the Parliament’s seven political groups at the end of October meant that this outcome was expected. Nevertheless, this is an important and welcome milestone, as Parliamentarians demand that EU laws are based in objective evidence, scientific reality and with respect for human rights law.
This vote signals major improvements compared to the Commission’s original draft law (coined ‘Chat Control’), which has courted controversy."
I was already highly considering switching to #Nothing, but this might lock me in.
"Nothing Chats is a first-of-its-kind app developed in partnership with #Sunbird, which allows you to message other #iMessage users via blue bubbles on your Nothing Phone."
Ayoba is an all-in-one chat, call, and social media app that has over 30 million active monthly users mostly in Africa
This is probably the app that Elon Musk wants X to be… Ayoba has chats, voice calling, channels, music, games, money transfers (MoMo – only available currently in Ghana, Uganda, Congo B and Cameroon), and various 3rd party services. It runs on Android and iOS ...continues
Our findings suggest that young people already employ several strategies for dealing with unwanted content. Indeed, they also had several ideas for how social media and other platforms can provide better tools to support their efforts at addressing unwanted content, which we outline in the report. We argue that as part of broader efforts to keep young people safe online, companies should invest more in supporting the ability of these users to protect themselves.
Element has a new home and will be adopting AGPL license for Synapse, Dendrite and associated server side projects.
"Future code contributors to Synapse will need to sign a contributor license agreement (CLA) based on the Apache Software Foundation’s CLA, giving Element ownership of their contribution so we can use it to help fund Matrix core development in future."
Back in May last year, the European Commission proposed what security maven Matthew Green described as “the most terrifying thing I’ve ever seen”—a law that would force everyone from Facebook to Signal to scan everyone’s messages not only for known child sexual abuse material (CSAM), but also for previously-unknown CSAM images, and also signs of someone apparently “grooming” a child for abuse. Other potentially privacy-threatening things were in there, like widespread mandatory age verification." https://fortune.com/2023/10/26/eu-chat-control-csam-encryption-privacy-european-commission-parliament-johansson-breyer-zarzalejos-ernst/
@GottaLaff
Me too. My response is to suggest the "Yes, and" method, which I learned at Bay Area Theatre Sports.
I want show people how we can move the story forward.
(BTW, I studied under Keith Johnstone at the Loose Moose Theatre in Calgary Canada.
He wrote the book Impro: Improvisation and the Theatre) #messaging#TheatreSports#Improv

Denis Simonov, a security researcher, who is also known as n0a, recently highlighted the issue and wrote a simple tool to exploit it. TechCrunch verified the researcher’s findings by adding Simonov to the contacts of a newly created Telegram account. Simonov then called the account, and shortly after provided TechCrunch with the IP address of the computer where the experiment was being carried out.
Telegram boasts 700 million users all over the world, and has always marketed itself as a “secure” and “private” messaging app, even though experts have repeatedly warned that Telegram is not as secure as end-to-end encrypted app Signal, for example.
The fact that Telegram leaks your IP address to people in your contacts during a voice call has been known for years, but it’s likely that new, less technical users may not be aware."
I mean, it’s simple: We can’t provide the information. So you can put a gun to my head — you’ll have to shoot. We don’t have it because it’s end-to-end encrypted. There’s no balancing that’s in our hands because of the guarantees we make. In part, [governments] are threatened because we can’t provide that information. There’s no way to sort of sit on us hard enough so that we start to undermine what we’re doing. Our code is open, it’s verified; our protocol implementation is open, and it’s been tried and tested. Everyone’s thrown everything against it, trying to find a vulnerability. They haven’t [found it]. This is a robust system. You’re not just trusting me to not play nice with governments. We literally don’t have the data, which is the only way to actually preserve privacy."
The Signal messaging app has been facing battles in India, Russia, Iran and other countries for its unyielding stance on privacy. The platform's president @Mer__edith talks about how the company deals with restrictive legislation from countries like India, she talks about concerns over competitor Telegram and her threat to pull Signal out of the UK.
#EU#Cybersecurity#Encryption#Messaging#CSAR: "By making a minor concession EU governments hope to find a majority next week to approve the controversial „chat control“ bill. According to the proposed child sexual abuse regulation (CSAR), providers of messengers, e-mail and chat services would be forced to automatically search all private messages and photos for suspicious content and report it to the EU. To find a majority for this unprecedented mass surveillance, the EU Council Presidency proposed Tuesday that the scanners would initially search for previously classified CSAM only, and even less reliable technology to classify unknown imagery or conversations would be reserved to a later stage. The proposed „deal“ will be discussed by ambassadors tomorrow and could be adopted by ministers next week.
