This is NOT good at all, and I can guess they saw the UK adopted a law of their own in the along with the US in and the and they seriously want to be the ones that would kill privacy, security, and online freedom of expression globally.

I am amused by the James Cameron joke, but very happy to see Signal is letting you edit messages after they're sent. (With a status change indicating they've been edited, and you can look back to see changes.)

"What's New — October 11, 2023 — Now you can right-click on any sent message or press the up arrow on your keyboard to edit what you just said."

: "When it comes to traceability and finding the originator of a viral message on an end-to-end encrypted messaging platform, Signal’s Meredith Whittaker is clear — it is not possible. And for Signal, since it does not have “viral forwarding functions”, the context is different from WhatsApp.

And even if the new Telecommunications Bill goes ahead with a mandatory KYC requirement for users on OTT platforms such as Signal and WhatsApp, Signal will not conduct a KYC of its users. “It is not possible for us to do that. And part of our commitment to privacy is that we treat ourselves like a third party and as Signal, try to have as little data as possible [of our users] because we recognise that is the only way to [have a privacy preserving platform],” she said.

Comparing KYC to age verification and other kind of authentication technologies, Whittaker said that such technologies build “surveillance regimes” that make it “very easy to track what everyone does online and offline” and “eliminate anonymity and privacy from it”."

When, exactly, are the #Democrats going to start #messaging, and acting like the upcoming #2024election is an existential battle for our #republic? The #WhiteHouse is doing exactly nothing to sell #JoeBiden's #accomplishments, and the #DNC might as well not even exist. Where are the relentless, coordinated messaging #campaigns? Where are the #ads? Where are the #elected Democrats? We're hurtling towards #annihilation, and nobody is doing a damn thing about it.

Whittaker noted that Signal takes a number of steps to ensure its users remain anonymous regardless of the laws and regulations in their particular country. I really need the Democrats to start pushing the "Chaos Caucus" message. If House MAGAs shut down the govt again, we should have ads ready to flood the airwaves with "this shutdown courtesy of the CHAOS CAUCUS" message. No Social Security? THANK THE CHAOS CAUCUS.

We're in a messaging war, and Republicans are always ahead of the game. We are way behind in the infrastructure needed to grab the mic and spread our message.

senatorbrownshirt,

@Litzz11

Good point.

And it should be noted that too many Democrats make this claim while remaining silent themselves - not realizing that THEY are the best messengers.

Instead, Democrats are prone to direct fire at their own and not at the opposition.

This can change, but it takes an attitude adjustment.

Cheers.

: "In January 2021, Threat Analysis Group (TAG) publicly disclosed a campaign from government backed actors in North Korea who used 0-day exploits to target security researchers working on vulnerability research and development. Over the past two and a half years, TAG has continued to track and disrupt campaigns from these actors, finding 0-days and protecting online users. Recently, TAG became aware of a new campaign likely from the same actors based on similarities with the previous campaign. TAG is aware of at least one actively exploited 0-day being used to target security researchers in the past several weeks. The vulnerability has been reported to the affected vendor and is in the process of being patched.

While our analysis of this campaign continues, we are providing an early notification of our initial findings to warn the security research community. We hope this post will remind security researchers that they could be targets of government backed attackers and to stay vigilant of security practices."

: "Is Signal using Artificial Intelligence (AI)?

Signal does use one small machine learning model which is actually part of our media editing suite of tools. It allows people to click a button to automatically makes faces unrecognizable in a photo; it runs locally on your phone. For example, if you take a photo of a party where you don’t know everyone, and you don’t have consent to share facial biometric data, you can click a button and this model will help you recognize faces and blur them so you can ensure privacy. That’s a nice and useful application of AI and it doesn’t send data to an app company.

What, then, is the problem with AI?

When AI systems are used, they are usually used for surveillance. They profile people’s faces and create data about whose face that is or what kind of person that face indicates. It’s used for ratings or for other purposes, which are surveillance in themselves. To create these AI systems, you first have to have huge amounts of data to train and inform those systems so they can be calibrated. The metastasis of AI as a kind of dominant and very hyped form of technology is antithetical to ensuring real privacy. It entrenches and expands the business model of surveillance, because its insatiable demand for data will naturally lead to more surveillance, more collection and generation of data."

: "A fake version of the private messaging app Signal has found a way onto Google Play and appears to be linked to a Chinese spy operation, researchers claimed on Wednesday.

The hackers, dubbed by researchers at cybersecurity company ESET as GREF, also released a version on Samsung’s Galaxy Store. The main aim of the fake Signal, which was called Signal Plus Messenger and functioned the same as the legitimate version, is to spy on communications of the real app, according to ESET researcher Lukas Stefanko.

The standard version of Signal allows users to link the mobile app to their desktop or Apple iPad. The malicious Signal Plus Messenger abused that feature by automatically connecting the compromised device to the attacker’s Signal in the background, so all messages were passed onto their account"

: "With end-to-end encrypted technology, no one but you and the intended recipients can know what you wrote or said — not hackers, the app companies or the police.

Except, not everything is end-to-end encrypted in end-to-end encrypted apps.

That could mean what you type in chats are saved on company computers that corporations such as Apple or your phone provider could read. Details such as the timestamps of every text to your boyfriend might not be under lock and key, either.
That’s not necessarily bad. Each end-to-end encryption choice has trade-offs. More privacy and security could also make it harder for you to use an app, or can shield activity of terrorists and child predators.

The mess I’m describing — end-to-end encryption but with certain exceptions — may be a healthy balance of your privacy and our safety.

The problem is it’s confusing to know what is encrypted and secret in communications apps, what is not and why it might matter to you.

To illuminate the nuances, I broke down five questions about end-to-end encryption for five communications apps."

: "The main criticism of the legislation to date has been on freedom of expression grounds. Critics have said it will have a chilling effect, encouraging tech giants to ban users who might get the platforms into trouble with the regulators. Now the companies are warning that the bill has a national security implication too.

Ukraine often uses messaging services to communicate securely with its allies, including the UK. The British armed forces and their allies also use services such as Signal alongside military communications systems. Do ministers really want to weaken western security? Have they thought this through?

If Signal and WhatsApp cannot be used on British-registered phones, anyone who needs access will presumably have to ship in a second, secure device from the US."
