In #cyberpunk , tech is an allegory for either oppression or rebellion, there's nothing outside the dichotomy.
In #superhero stories, tech is always a weapon and any other use is invisible.
In #solarpunk then, tech could be a "crystallized community", with the sum of its values, cultures and decisions codified into the #infrastructure they create.

"In 2022, days after Palestinian journalist Shireen Abu Akleh was murdered by an Israeli sniper, Ruth Anderson wrote an article on Index on Censorhip’s website about the matter. Neither Israel nor the Israeli army were mentioned."
🧵 1 In these times, we often read about #numbers. Numbers can set #narratives. It is important to #check your #sources! And it's helpful to add your sources to your posts, so others can verify easier. Even if they are official, a Chinese newspaper works different than an UK one, a US TV channel different to a EU one.
From the journalistic box of knowledge: The more conflict, the more difficult to check numbers independently. We have to say: We got this number from X but can't check the truth.
I agree with KSR "The Ministry for the Future": we are going to see a lot of targeted assassinations and violence both from the defenders of status quo and the revolutionaries. It's a very hard topic, one I have little experience in, but I have one strong belief:
"If something did go terribly wrong in human history – and given the current state of the world, it’s hard to deny something did – then perhaps it began to go wrong precisely when people started losing that freedom to imagine and enact other forms of social existence, to such a degree that some now feel this particular type of freedom hardly even existed, or was barely exercised, for the greater part of human history."
I am so lucky to have a job that is all about wonder. I'm inspired by city buildings, non-human inhabitants of the metropolis and of course by London's human beings. I tell stories for adults and children, I discover and shape #narratives, I work with businesses, schools, institutions, individuals and charities, I mentor and teach storytelling.
This house is in #Lewisham it brightens my day every time I pass. It was created by Mr Pink, a reggae musician who came to London in the #Windrush era.
When writing my #solarpunk essay to the Polish ZNAK magazine I was asked to write a section outlining the differences between the movement and #longtermism (together with #effectiveAltruism, #transhumanism and more).
I think it's important to understand what #TESCREAL (a term coined by Timnit Gebru) is and how it might be one of the dominating narratives on our future in the coming years.
We should see it when it subtly influences the narratives around us, when yet another #technoSolutionism preacher tells us that we need to give even more control to whoever is holding power over tech.
That's it's a technological, not a social problem.
#CfP for the #panel "Reassessing Resource #Narratives: #Ecocritical Perspectives on the Illusion of #Surplus", which will take place at the Northeast Modern Languages Association (#NeMLA#northeastMLA) convention in Boston on March 7-10, 2024.
Russia has not only weaponized information, refugees, energy, and food crises— but also the #Russophobia#narrative. In a UN General Assembly speech this September, Russia’s Foreign Minister Sergey #Lavrov blasted the West, stating “The official Russophobia in the West is unprecedented.”
This is not a surprise; for Moscow, the Russophobia argument is a powerful weapon that has historically crushed domestic opposition movements, scapegoated the West, and appealed to Western moral sentiments.
The U.S. Department of State details how, amongst its top “persistent #disinformation#narratives,” is Russia’s “#innocent#victim” Russophobia argument. Indeed, Putin’s use of racism and Russophobia to support his attack on Ukraine mirrors the strategies of his Kremlin predecessors
#Ukraine 's president, Volodymyr #Zelensky , is in #Bulgaria for talks on defence and security. He's thanked the prime minister Nikolai Denkov for Bulgaria's military support, which he said had saved many Ukrainian lives. He's also meeting President Rumen Radev, who has publicly opposed sending Bulgarian- made #ammunition to Ukraine. (cont.)
What took many #Bulgaria -ns by surprise was the flood of pro- #Kremlin#narratives over the last year and a half. This #Balkan country - once a close satellite of the #Soviet Union - took a pro-Western course after the fall of communism. But #Moscow ’s influence didn’t go away - and the war in #Ukraine highlighted the strength of pro- #Russian feelings in this #Nato country, prompting questions about its Euro-Atlantic loyalty.
Ep 2.9 is live! @arielkroon discusses the topic of ecocriticism with Dr Jenny Kerber, Associate Professor of English at Wilfrid Laurier University.
What is #ecocriticism? Why is it important, especially for #environmental activists and solarpunks, as a narrative reframing device? Solarpunks work very closely with speculation and imagination and as architects of the narratives by which we live our lives, it helps to have tools like ecocriticism at our disposal.
Join Ariel and Dr. Kerber to think through terms like “#wilderness” and “#nature” and “the #Anthropocene." How do we hold on to #hope, despite critical engagement with the dark side of our environmental #narratives ?
“Mass #propaganda discovered that its audience was ready at all times to believe the worst, no matter how absurd, and did not particularly object to being deceived because it held every statement to be a lie anyhow. The totalitarian mass leaders based their propaganda on the correct psychological assumption that, under such conditions, one could make people believe the most fantastic statements one day, and trust that if the next day they were given irrefutable proof of their falsehood, they would take refuge in #cynicism; instead of deserting the leaders who had lied to them, they would protest that they had known all along that the statement was a lie and would admire the leaders for their superior tactical cleverness.”

@nicholas_saunders Sure:
The essay #Totalitarianism was fisrt published in 1951 as the third volume of "The Origins of Totalitarianism".
In it, Hannah Arendt argues that totalitarianism was a "novel form of government," in that it applied terror to subjugate mass populations rather than just political adversaries. Further, Arendt states that, owing to the insertion of ideology into the apparatus of coercion, "totalitarianism has discovered a means of dominating and terrorizing human beings from within". She further contends that Jewry was not the operative factor in the genocide of European Jews, but merely a convenient proxy. That totalitarianism in Germany was, in the end, about terror and consistency, not eradicating Jews only.
