This is my Sharkey 🙃

You can call me Dane.

I started out on the fediverse arooooound...I wanna say 2017/18 mebbe? My big start in social media was MySpace. Before that, I had a LiveJournal (which I miss mightily with all my heart). My very first computer was a Gateway PC, back when they shipped them to you in those awesome cow spot pattern boxes. I am trying to de-google my life.

I'm and suffer from . I'm currently unmedicated. I can be damned moody at times, so there's your warning.

Religiously/spiritually speaking, I'm complicated. That will be a long post, when I get around to writing it. My general rule is: I have my thing. It's not everybody's thing, and that's cool. Not everybody's thing is my thing, and that's cool. Just don't be a wanker towards those whose thing ain't your thing. OM 🕉

I'm 57 years old and have come to the conclusion that we never truly appreciate the decades we grew up in until we hit middle age.

I'm single and childless, hence my user tag: TheLastOfHisName.

And now, a hefty list of hashtags....

Just read SpeedRune.

Tl;dr: What if #RuneQuest, but without the metric fuckloads of hyper-specific lore, and jettisoning all mechanical complexity?

Short. To the point. Captures the core ideas that make RuneQuest cool in an extremely minimal fashion.

GMs: Give this to your players. Read the actual RuneQuest books yourself. Ransack them for things to put in your game.

This may literally be the best way to play RuneQuest.

@masukomi I am hacking a version of this to fit a multiverse hopping series of one shots. And am really excited to use it with #Glorantha materials. Aaron King also organized an Itch jam in December 2023 that included over 10 submissions of supplements and originals. https://itch.io/jam/speedrune-jam/entries

@Acantigue ooh I didn’t know about that jam. Thanks.

Glorantha is amazing, but I would absolutely hate to play in the world. I read one of the adventures they put out recently and there was this interaction with a ghost, but if you didn’t know the interplay & backstory of like five different gods you would not understand how to proceed or what was actually going on.

I prefer it as just a source of materials to steal from than something everyone at the table has to memorize

OK, running with 3 adventurers is always going to be a dicey business. They won but one adventurer bled out from a head wound because the First Aid roll failed and the only other adventurer who could heal was in a one-on-one honor duel with a Humakti whilst this was happening…

Ah damn. Jennell Jacquays has died. She co-wrote "Griffin Mountain", the first #RuneQuest campaign I ran. I still think about some of the scenarios written for that campaign, and that was over 40 years ago.
Fly well, Jannelle, and thanks for the memories.

About to meet the GM of the intermittent Sunday #RuneQuest game where I play the Axe Sister Varena. An actual FTF meeting! For the first time! And then breakfast.

A pleasant chat and breakfast was had. Now, after a larger lunch (a lamb rump) at La Capannina in Scarborough I’m going to walk for half an hour or so to a) walk off some of that lovely lunch and b) see Mum and c) Make my sports watch quiet down for a bit (it buzzes at me when I’m sedentary for too long in its opinion).

As I am delving further into #Glorantha , I am struck how the default assumption of #RuneQuest is that the player character are tightly bound to a specific clan and region - while in #DnD , the PCs are usually assumed to be "independent adventurers" beholden to no one (neither of these #ttrpg are limited to these approaches, but that's usually the starting point).

Which brings me to the scope of the games I have played in and run in the past. In my younger days, the PCs were often globetrotting - traveling from one country or region to the next. I suspect we were all influenced by "The Lord of the Rings" which, after all, is a huge travel quest.

But now, as I grow older, I usually run campaigns with a more regional focus. The PCs almost always have a fixed "home base", and there are lots of recurring NPCs they interact with - and scheme with or against. They will explore the surrounding regions, and their hometown will change over time - but they will always return home.

Thus, I am curious - what is the scope of your own campaign? Are the PCs homeless travelers who always move from one place to the next - or do they stick to a particular town or region?

As someone who struggled with #RuneQuest during the pre-Guide draught, it’s been a real pleasure to see the ancient RPG find new life thanks to #JeffRichards, the newest RQ2-compatible edition #RuneQuestGlorantha, a wave of new fans, and the amazing amount of new material such as #SixSeasonsInSartar.

I've recently started to explore #Glorantha , the setting of the #RuneQuest #ttrpg , and read some of its many, many books.

If you want to follow my journey, check out this thread on RPGNet!

#Glorantha is well known for its deep and intricate mythology... and now it has a book entirely dedicated to this topic! Let's look at the new Cults of #RuneQuest: Mythology book, in depth. #TTRPG https://godlearners.com/review-cults-of-runequest-mythology/

Last sunday my #Runequest campaign started. 4 players at the table with different degree of #ttrpg experience and myself as GM and newbie to this edition of the game. We played A Rough Landing, part of the Starter Set. It went well! Combat is a bit crunchy, but everyone had fun.

Okay, I must say that reading through old / material is certainly good for lots of interesting plot ideas, among other things.

Such as:

"The main cult of an expanding empire is planning to marry one of its priestesses to the city god of a remote city-state in order to tie that city closer to the empire!"

I hadn't come across that type of plot before, but it certainly has lots of potential for adventures...

@Da_Gut Alas, no - my time is limited, and there are just so many books to read.

"A god has died, and it’s up to Tara, a first-year associate in the international necromantic firm of Kelethras, Albrecht, and Ao, to bring him back to life before his city falls apart.

Her client is Kos, recently deceased fire god of the city of Alt Coulumb. Without him, the metropolis’ steam generators will shut down, its trains will cease running, and its four million citizens will riot.

Tara’s job: resurrect Kos before chaos sets in."

"Yes, the Red Emperor has died a couple of times. And when he came back, he had different appearances and personalities. But he is always the same person!"

Is this true? What is "true", anyway? #Glorantha #RuneQuest #ttrpg

@juergen_hubert IIRC those are the Masks that the Red Emperor wears. He is still the Red Emperor under those masks.

I've decided to start reading the #RuneQuest #ttrpg , and am currently reading the #Glorantha Sourcebook.

And I must say, Orlanth comes across as a massive jerk. Not only the whole "killing the Sun" thing, but also his "courtship" of Ernalda. Which seems to be mostly about him getting upset at her, and she doing her best to appease him - a pretty toxic relationship, in my opinion.

juergen_hubert,
@juergen_hubert@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@zdl Yeah, I gathered that. 😉

And it's refreshing - I'd rather have that than a setting where certain gods are "designated Good" despite all the evidence to the contrary (looking at you, Dragonlance...).

juergen_hubert,
@juergen_hubert@thefolklore.cafe avatar

@zdl If your mythology is consistent, you are doing it wrong.
