On #NationalUnderwearDay I want to talk about the ancestor of the bra: the strophion!

In #GreekRomanArt the goddess #Aphrodite can sometimes be seen putting it on or taking it off but mortal women are depicted wearing it too.

It is uncertain what the Greek strophion looked like but the Roman adaptation, the strophium, was a breast band, a strip of cloth wrapped around the upper torso.

It was a normal but optional piece of feminine clothing.

In an act of religious extremism a tourist from the US smashed 2 Graeco-Roman statues in the Israel Museum: a head of the goddess #Athena (2nd century CE) and a statue of a #griffin clutching the wheel of fate, symbolising the goddess #Nemesis (210-211 CE). The giffin statue, as evident from published photographs, was broken into pieces. The tourist had targeted the statues because he deemed them “idolatrous” and in opposition to the Torah (Old Testament).

I caved and joined #BlueSky after a kind friend offered me an invite code.

For now, I think the only thing BlueSky has really going for it is that a lot of my friends have accounts there that never made a #Mastodon account, especially artist friends. Which makes sense because discovery features on Mastodon are only now getting better.

Functionality is super limited, there are no lists, no DMs, no hashtags. But my friends inviting their friends means a large part of my OG community is there.

I need advice from the techies on Mastodon:

I'm using Ghost's blog software for my website. The only integrated option for the native #newsletter tool is #Mailgun.

Sadly, I don't have the know-how to run my own bulk mail server.

Do I best stick with Mailgun or do I go for option two, use a Czech-based #Zapier alternative (Make) that integrates with a German-hosted newsletter service? Or a 3rd option?

I'm a bit sad. I've tried to bring people over to #Mastodon with what are good arguments to ME: #NSFW content creators will eventually be shadowbanned or booted off a platform as soon as there is advertisers or payment processors demanding it. For marginalised people, Mastodon has powerful tools to stay safe.
But most people I talk to do acknowledge that and then go on to stay on #Twitter or sign up for #Bluesky.
But I understand the discoverability issues, it's Mastodon's greatest weakness IMO.

This week's #MythologyMonday theme is work.
Four deities spring to my mind when I think of work: #Demeter, #Hermes, #Hephaistos, and #Athena. #AncientGreece was an agricultural society with 80% of the population being involved in this line of work. In Greek mythology, it was Demeter who invented agriculture but according to Diodorus Siculus she burnt all the grain when her daughter #Persephone vanished out of grief and anger.

This week's #MythologyMonday theme is healing. The God of Healing is #Apollon but there are other gods who share in a subset of his power. Apollon's son #Asklepios famously brought dead people back to life. Deified after his untimely death by Zeus' thunderbolt, he received a cult of his own, the Temples of Asklepios serving as hospitals. Asklepios had children of his own, among them Panacea (Cure-all), and Hygieia (Health).
But he is not the only healing god associated with Apollon.

This week's #MythologyMonday theme is fire and there are two major Greek gods associated with fire: #Hestia, goddess of the hearth, and #Hephaistos, god of smiths.

They represent #fire in two different forms: the sacrificial flame of the hearth as the sacred centre of domestic life and the flame of Hephaistos, source of all arts, and fuel of the funeral pyre. But both could be invoked for the cooking of sacrificial meat or a good meal:

As an erotica writer, I know people come to me for entertainment and escapism, so I don't post about politics on the regular. However, I will never be quiet about issues that affect adult content creators and/or LGBTQ+ people (who make up a large part of my audience). Bring on the controversy. If I get cancelled for saying kink belongs at Pride or whatever, so be it.

There are many famous revenge stories in #GreekMythology but none so impressive to young Aimée as Euripides' version of #Medea. In the Argonautika, #Hera asks #Aphrodite to make Medea fall in love with Iason to ensure her aid to obtain the golden fleece. After betraying her own family, Medea leaves with the Argonauts, helping them not only with the golden fleece but also with Talos, the bronze automaton built by #Hephaistos to protect the island of #Crete.
