Agree that there are equity issues. At least now, with wages behind inflation, graduates are not going to fall increasingly behind.

A general reminder that you cannot trust anyone that wears a Burberry tie

I don't normally trust anyone in a suit. But if you are talking about the Lehrman case, I think judge Lee got it right.

OK. Thought you were referring to the Burberry tie the judge was wearing.

How would you address climate change?
Anything but reduce carbon emissions and instead focus on impractical 'pie in the sky' solutions like nuclear energy and CCS.

low tech stuff is great but I also look for "mid tech" when acquiring appliances:

  • physical buttons (not touch or digital)
  • absence of microchips and complex PCBs (e.g. magnet-based rice cooker)
  • metal parts
  • tech that is easy to understand, access and modify (e.g. simple dishwasher)
  • parameters > preset menus (e.g. food drier has a "timer" knob and a "temperature" knob rather than buttons for "fruit", "mushrooms", "jerky" etc.)
  • expendable components are standard and replaceable (e.g. batteries, light bulbs)
  • absence of apps
  • absence of Internet
  • absence of "AI"
  • no electricity > electricity (e.g. analog multimeter, thermometer, scale)
  • plugged on > battery power
  • wired > wireless

Yes, we have a fridge that is covered in lights and buttons. Not helpful.
I suspect most people in the first world have lives full of devices with dozens of 'must have' features they never use.

We talk about Australia attracting skilled migration without much thought, but putting an internationalist lens over this we are just head-hunting from poorer countries where those skills are needed more.
The migrants benefit, and Australia benefits, but the majority world suffers. It is intellectual extractivism with colonialist undertones.
No solution, just saying.

When teaching I used AI like ChatGPT to churn out a few paragraphs of background. So for instance I set a group work assignment and ask for some dot points I could edit on effective group work to use in the introduction to the assignment. In the past, I would write it myself, but the AI saved me 20 minutes.

I want to say “not in my name”

And I want to say the maths here show the insanity of the idea that violence can bring peace, or that war can defeat Hamas.

One leader killed. 50 innocent refugees killed. Hundreds more recruited to the cause of the dead leader?

And the hatred this is breeding and feeding around the world… It is utterly terrifying and horrific.

End the cycle of violence.

🤩 Aren't you just delighted by all those proprietary software apps for the ?

😮 Don't be. Each time you choose proprietary you help turn the fedi slowly in the direction of the usual corporate hellscape that the rest of the Web already is.

😨 And then we end up in an online space where for years we can complain to each other how we squandered an opportunity and how won once more.

🎯 Use apps instead, created by the public for the public.

🌻 Keep the Fediverse open.

Bandicoot,

https://joinmastodon.org/apps
I use Fedilab or Tusky, depending on my mood.

Bandicoot,
@Bandicoot@theblower.au avatar

@smallcircles @mativity
so are Tusky and Fedilab OSS?
I am not sure it makes much difference while Mastodon servers are open source. The apps can't change the nature of the fediverse or the servers? They are just an interface after all.

I see everyoine is (rightly so) ripping on Musk's new all-male xAI effort to "understand the true nature of the universe."

But the real problem is AI can't tell us anything new beyond what scientists have already figured out. It doesn't do any "thinking" or actual research or anything new; it simply regurgitates re-formulated ideas based on the science of what we already know.

What is MIGHT produce, especially since Musk is leading this, is garbage speculation unsupported by evidence.

Bandicoot,
@Bandicoot@theblower.au avatar

@petergleick
I decided to ask Elon's giant hive mind (🐦) this question. The reply was a picture of a scantily dressed girl with very exaggerated anatomy and a few Bible verses of questionable relevance.
Needless to say I am not very confident xAI will do any better. Looks like a massively funded school group project for the science fair.

Incidentally @Vivaldi is a really cool browser which has integrated with the Fediverse. So worth supporting.
You can have your Mastodon feed open in a sidepanel while you browse, and they provide an instance as well.
I still appreciate this instance, where I have been at home, but I thought an instance with (ethical) corporate backing might be more stable into the future? Maybe not. There are plusses and minuses.
