I feel so soap-boxy lately, maybe because I’m teaching a class, but here’s another kernel of truth I’ll throw at y’all about communities:

If you are trying to get new people,especially diverse people and young people into your hobby, and your first reaction is to show off your really expensive kit and say how much it cost, you are gatekeeping mega mode, even if you’re just trying to share your interest. Nobody wants to hear there is a $1500 (or $5000) barrier to entry to their new hobby. It’s demoralizing, not educational, and they’re just gonna leave.

Happens in bicycles, drones, photography, astronomy, gaming, marksmanship… you name it, there’s a rich older white dude ready to show off his six grand investment in a hobby to a college student with a three digit bank account.

We should celebrate hacking your way into a hobby with minimal investment and maximum creativity.

I love that MKBHD, the biggest tech youtuber on earth, started a new channel called autofocus where he talks about electric cars using only a smart phone just to show you can create great content without expensive additional camera equipment and lighting.

Do you prefer typing emoji instead of stopping to choose them from a picker?

You can do this when writing a post on Mastodon's web interface by typing a : (colon) and then a keyword without a space. This will automatically bring up emoji with that keyword in their description.

For example if you type :sun it will show you emoji with the keyword "sun".

(Note that if there are many matches for a keyword, you may need to go to the picker to see them all.)

It’s just ridiculous hearing people talk about what an awesome experience threads is. I was perfectly open to it, but what they presented is unambiguously awful. No lists, no hashtags, no search. The only thing this provides is a steady stream of news posts with no reply commentary or analysis whatever. It’s just a gigantic step backwards. Good news for the fediverse however. It can provide all the rest for the 0.001% of humanity that gives a single shit about anything anymore .

Wow, those snazzy new AR goggles are absolutely AMAZING, but I feel like Apple has created yet another HomePod, as in it’s going to be a big deal in terms of design and performance, but at an eye-watering $3,500, competitors will quickly offer “good enough” AR goggles for SIGNIFICANTLY less money, leaving Apple once again to the limited sales of the high end of the market.

But I also don’t run a trillion dollar company, so what do I know?

    @ngmi very interesting! I wonder if there is a potential tie in with something like gitcoin passport or other decentralized identity protocols. Would be cool to have a trust score associated with emails. This seems like a huge unlock for security already. Perhaps also steps towards prioritization of inbound messages?
