Odd. Got a package I never ordered from Amazon. Odd stuff: fitness accessories (women’s yoga clothes, stretching straps, swimsuit both men’s and women’s, a Golf Bag rain hood…) and an indescribable box of plastic pieces that look like table skirt clips except there’s adhesive on one side and it can’t “clamp” to a table at all.

There’s no record of the order on my customer account. No charges on my card. (Amazon bills customers the moment an order is shipped out typically, except common carrier shipments of large items that bill you the moment it arrives. Usually after you sign for it if the carrier uses any tech fulfillment at all.) And the shipping label is my name and address, zero typos.

So what do I do? This is a reminder to people in a time of unmitigated corporate greed: the law is on your side.

@britt Excellent moment to mention to people: if you have the ability to do so, consider donating a small amount monthly to your instance of choice to help them out. Methods vary by instance, with a small number refusing donations altogether. (This isn't common, though. In cloud computing nothing server based is free if you want to reach more than 2-3 people.)

Granted $5 a month isn't going to pay for cloud storage by itself per person, but that's $5 the admin doesn't have to spend out of pocket elsewhere. $5 more for groceries, $5 more to pay a surprise electric bill, etc. The money freed up to handle their own needs does more than you think. And if enough people do that, $200-400 a month to keep the servers could be self sustaining if 40-80 people chip in (for an instance with 2,000 people), it doesn't have to be everybody.

If you can't donate for various reasons, don't worry about it. Nobody should miss a bill or fail to eat to keep a community project running, but if you have the means to do so, please consider it. Especially now when demands are increasing across all instances.

I have some insider knowledge here that I wanted to share.

This is not happening because Google scrapes Twitter and is now unable to. Google has been a paying customer (with a special negotiated rate) of the Firehose API for nearly a decade. Presumably, that deal was still in effect, barring API rate changes having an impact.

So this decision is solely because the results can no longer be viewed by non-logged-in users.

Listen. My husband and I paid off all of our student debts the old fashioned way. When I heard younger people getting relief I could only think one thing:

Thank God someone noticed the huge negative impact debts have. It was one of the best things Biden did. And only fair considering PPP relief and bailout happened.

Going of your way to reverse what was already settled is spiteful. Especially when the PPP relief isn't even questioned.

SOCUTS is full of spite for ordinary people.

I wish for debt on nobody. Not even people I don't like. Anyone who thinks financial aid needs cancelled or any loans made stronger than the forbearance of debt aren't concerned with the money lost, they're after punishment.

I really love the here on . Unlike on previous corporate-owned platforms I’ve used, Mastodon filters allow me to hide one major source of traffic: the US.

English is my primary language and America and its culture floods the anglosphere.

I’m Australian and Dutch. I wish the best for Americans but I have no need to be kept up to date on every detail of the latest horrible thing happening in that country.
