@ottaross Did the little pot come with the stove? I've been using one of those homemade beer can ones with a similar design (which works great) but the usual cookware seems a bit unwieldy on something so small.

DamonWakes,

@ottaross Ah! It was the fact it seemed just the right size that made me wonder.

I don't know, pick one:

A. You have an excellent education, the means to answer questions: building a consistent understanding of the world. You are hard to trick. That said, you live in a society where the powerful can't be criticized. Many things you know cannot be said.

B. You freely and loudly express your ideas. But, you have very little education, formal or otherwise. You have been tricked before & know you could be again. You just don't have the best tools to prevent this.

@DamonWakes@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

@mattmcirvin @futurebird I feel as though the flat earth people make noises about that ideal but don't really follow through with it. They'll try experiments to determine the shape of the Earth, but when the dead simple "find a long, still body of water and see if the base of a tree on the other side is obscured when you view it from a low angle" approach confirms that the surface of the water is curved, they'll simply disregard that.

I have finally dragged on clothes, so welcome to !

I share my tee, you show me your tee/shirt/outfit, everyone looks awesome and cute, it's great.

Today's shirt is Ashenspire's Three Months to the Gutter tee, art by Hagiophobic.

They're an avant-garde red/anarchist black metal (RABM) band, and Hostile Architecture is one of my favourite albums of the last few years. Equal parts beautiful and brutal, and upholding the rule that all metal bands with saxophones are good.

If you're near London in the UK, they're playing at Desertfest at the Electric Ballroom this afternoon at 14:30.

New book on worldbuilding.

Author says: "Architect of Worlds is what happens when the guy who wrote three different solar system/planetary generation systems for GURPS is told he doesn't have a word count and spends 7 years tracking every paper on exoplanet systems he can find."

[ I have a copy and am impressed by the detail. More importantly author includes citations of original scientific papers ]

    New #automotive paranoia:

    We had a car drive itself into a tree. On its own. It isn't even an electric. Though I guess it wanted to be?

    The fucking starter shorted out somehow, and the STARTER DROVE THE ENTIRE ENGINE. DESPITE THE PARKING BRAKE BEING ON.

    I've never even heard of this failure mode. WTF.

    Here's something @futurebird might enjoy: I found an ant on my bathroom sink yesterday morning and thought little of it.

    Then I found three ants there in the afternoon, which was a little odd. What could they be after?

    Then, in the evening, I noticed the bottle of mouthwash.

    @futurebird It does contain sorbitol. Maybe that's what appeals to them? Alternatively, I imagine it could be the alcohol: presumably that's a source of calories if nothing else.

    Weird question, but I need a very effective jumpscare sound. Like, one that will just terrify anyone if it shows up of nowhere.

    (and yes, the person about to experience the thing will know it's a thing ahead of the thing, so they can chose to not experience the thing, so it's morally OK!)

    How do I find such a sound? I've had bad luck on Freesound so far. License needs to be very permissive but I'm ok with crediting the maker ofc.

    I started playing the Resident Evil 3 remake today and it's truly bizarre how much better it runs in Proton than the Resident Evil 2 remake.

    For 2 I had to set all the graphics options to minimum (I think more due to system requirements than Proton compatibility). It was initially stable but started crashing later on. 3, however, runs flawlessly on default settings (which look great). If it's just that well optimised I'm incredibly impressed!

    As a HS CS teacher I'm often torn when someone asks "do you do anything with AI with the kids?" not so much because of the controversies, but rather because nearly all projects I could plan would require using libraries of code without explaining how they work.

    I feel the need to go from scratch to some degree. I know using libraries of part of coding, a worthy skill... but I have not been impressed with the cake mix lesson plans I've seen.

    Has anyone seen anything that addresses this?

    DamonWakes,
    @DamonWakes@mastodon.sdf.org avatar

    @javierg @futurebird I'd be very interested in seeing those 40 lines of Python if you're happy to share. It would really help counter the idea that text generation of this sort needs a colossal amount of material shoved into an incomprehensible machine of unfathomable complexity.

    I'd quite like to have a Midjourney and/or ChatGPT-type tool trained exclusively on public domain material. I don't care if it produces images that are half woodcut and half 1920s book illustration, or if all the text reads like a pamphlet from the 17th Century. I'd rather have a garbage tool that can produce fun stuff guilt-free than an up-to-date "AI" trained on a bunch of stuff that people have supposedly provided by not noping out of a scummy ToS change fast enough.

    @MachineLordZero Possibly not exactly what you're going for, but the closest thing that springs to mind for me is Waking Mars. You start off in a dormant Martian ecosystem and have to grow plants to gain seeds to grow plants that open up new areas. It doesn't exactly involve a "base" as such but there is a steadily growing area of Mars that you're building up and making safe(r).

    DamonWakes,

    @gray17 Someone on the event Discord actually did it, and reckons it took about an hour and a half. Still definitely longer than ideal. I think if I were to come back to this idea, I'd try to add upgrades that allow more efficient use of love bucks but demand greater skill to use effectively. I was hoping that was how this would work as-is, but in hindsight it's too easy to create a sustainable chain reaction too early in the game.
