Bike ride today. Was planning about 30 miles. Did 6. Hot, grumpy. Was gonna pack it in but then remembered I had planned to go see the Yoda statue at Letterman in the Presidio. Then I had some lunch. Then I went to Tunnel Tops and painted. Then Sophia, my new friend, decided she wanted to try watercolor painting too. Best day ever.

Nice day for a bike ride. Except for the 25000mph winds. That’s enough! Tired of wind! Very tired!

First photo in Fitzgerald Marine Reserve’s Dardenelle Trail lined with towering Monterey cypresses.

Second photo, I was glad I was on a two-wheeler when I went off the coastal bike path to get away from the winds right off the ocean for a short bit. We got a lot of rain yesterday.

Getting used to riding an upright bike in prep for doing a tour in France and Germany on an e-bike borrowed over there. In 2 weeks! Will be glad to be back on the recumbent when I get back home.

Did I say I’m done with the wind?

Did the Paradise Loop in Marin yesterday for the first time in a few years. Discovered there is now an honor shack for snacks and water at 2900 Paradise. Well stocked.

Best thing was a note inside on the board from Soren, who did his first Paradise loop. 6 years old. “Dont give up.”

It’s a good thing he wrote that note because the wind got a lot stronger and colder from that point on and I didn’t like it one bit. But he told me not to give up. So I didn’t.

On today’s ride, we braved the stiff wind to watch the action at the mouth of Pilarcitos Creek as it ran into .

(No audio since all you’d hear is wind noise.)

Looking straight out to the ocean from above a beach on a short bluff. Water from Pilarcitos Creek flows through a sand dune from left to right along the bottom of the frame, then makes a sharp turn to the left to finish its run to the ocean. A wave runs up onto a sandy spit formed by the creek, flooding the area and displacing a large flock of seagulls. A minute later than drop back down and hang out in the same place. It’s a sunny day and the sunlight is glaring off the water.

Today I finished a year-long project 🍾🎉 of painting a 1 inch (2.5cm) square for almost every day of the past year. As a novice watercolorist it was a good challenge and I’m glad I did it.

The main subject was the slice of Pacific Ocean and sky I can see from our house. If I traveled or had something otherwise interesting to me I painted something about that.

Things I learned:

  • Simplify! A very small canvas means pare down the details.
  • Clouds and waves are hard.
  • Arthritic fingers don’t like tiny areas to paint.

I used 6x9inch 140lb cold press paper.

Watercolor-painted days of the months of September 2023 through February 2024. Mostly scenes of the sea and sky in all their many possible colors, with and without waves. The month of November is mostly sunsets, including a week’s worth painted as one image. There are scenes from a New England trip in September, atmospheric rivers raining on us in December through February, and many blue sky days.

Pacific Ocean laps against a shallow sandy beach with some rocks in it. In the foreground is the edge of a low bluff above the beach. The sky is blue, the waves are small, there is some white foam at the edge of the water as it runs up the sand.
Looking out over the Pacific Ocean at high tide as it rolls over a reef, creating lots of foamy low waves. The foreground is a high bluff with green grass and shrubs and a dirt single-track trail that goes along the edge. A very blue sky crowns it all.

Okay, it’s official, everyone in gets to take tomorrow off. The National Weather Service says so.

“You have to get outside on Saturday. It’s been a while since we’ve had a dry weekend and Saturday will be a beautiful day with warm weather, light winds, and plenty of sunshine. High temps are expected to reach the upper 60s to low 70s. That’s about 5 degrees warmer than normal for this time of year but unlikely to challenge any daily records. So go for a bike ride, rent a kayak, or hit a bucket of balls. The chore list can wait for another day.”

Sheesh, let’s talk about and sand transport on beaches. Here are two photos taken 22 hours apart, yesterday and today, from the same spot, where Frenchman’s Creek and Pilarcitos Creek meet up to bust through to .

Overcast day, same spot, same bluff with greenery, same winding Frenchman’s Creek coming from the right. We see more of Pilarcitos Creek coming from the lower left and curving to the left after cutting through the sand dune, again taking along the flow from Frenchman’s. There is no little peninsula any more, there is no wide mouth any more, there is a whole lot of sand where there wasn’t yesterday, but still the creeks were able to cut through to get to Half Moon Bay.
