Alright , I want your thoughts. One of my friends is selling off his synths and pedal collections to get a more focused setup. I'm thinking of nabbing a few for myself to add to my own excessive collection. ๐Ÿ˜†

I've been playing a lot of reverse bullet hell roguelites of late, such as , , and . Does anyone have recommendations for new ones to try out?

I got a new toy over the weekend: the Pittsburgh Modular Taiga! It's a bit like if you took the Cre8audio East Beast and West Pest and combined them, then threw in a bunch of extra things, like a preamp, a delay, and a third oscillator. I wasn't really planning on buying this, but I couldn't resist at the price I got it, so I guess I'm going to sell off the East Beast and West Pest.

Some recent plays:

A new couple started showing up at my FLGS. Introduced them to Ticket to Ride: Europe last Thursday. Brought along the trains from The Little Plastic Train Company, which are always a hit.

Last Saturday, we played . I think it might have been a bit much for them, but they got the hang of it by the end.

Yesterday, Architects of the West Kingdom hit the table. First time at 5, and it's still great, even with that many people!

Midway through a four player game of Spirit Island. Four island boards are connected together into a diamond shape. Wooden discs representing the spirits' presence, wooden huts representing the natives, and plastic people, towns, and cities representing the invaders are spread out across the board.
End game state for Architects of the West Kingdom. Wooden meeples occupy various locations of a medieval town where different actions can be taken. Two rows of cards line the near corner, showing various artisans that each give a buff to an action on the board. The far corner has five neat rows of meeples occupying the guild hall where players can build buildings or contribute to the cathedral.

I grew up playing a ton of Flash games. Thanks to projects like Flashpoint or Ruffle, I'm able to relive parts of childhood.

Some stuff has aged well. Most of it hasn't. But it's a fun nostalgia trip for me, regardless.

Anyone else have fond memories of Flash/Shockwave/Java/etc. games?

Album of the Day 158: Animals by Pink Floyd

1977 prog rock album from one of the all time greats. Kind of the red-headed stepchild of Pink Floyd's mainstream peak. It's a solid album that suffers mostly from being surrounded by some of the greatest albums of all time.

Fun fact: David Gilmour played bass on both "Pigs" and "Sheep," with bassist Roger Waters playing rhythm guitar instead.

Album of the Day 25: The Silent Ballet: Volume 1 by Various

The Silent Ballet was a website focused on mostly post-rock music. Between 2006 and 2010, they released 16 compilation albums, all released under the CC BY-NC-ND license.

While The Silent Ballet is mostly defunctโ€”they generate top 100 albums and tracks lists once a yearโ€”the Creative Commons license means these albums are still available. It's a sort of window into a period of time.

Playing The Plum Island Horror solo. It's getting too late to finish this play, and I've definitely made rules mistakes, but it's been a lot of fun.

Midway through a game of The Plum Island Horror. While all of the player units have survived so far, a few civilians have been evacuated, and plenty more are being escorted to safety, a handful have succumbed to the waves of horrors, and one of the evacuation points has been overrun.

2022 experimental rock album from London, England. A crazy experience that takes from prog rock, show tunes, jazz fusion, and more. A hellish nightmare concept album, at times sung, at other times ranted in a blend of carnival barker and auctioneer; often hectic, occasionally soft, frequently discordant.

Album of the Day 148: Time Trax Soundtrack by Tim Follin

So bear with me here. Time Trax was a TV series that ran 1993-94. In 1994, a video game based on the series was released for the SNES.

This isn't that soundtrack. This is the one for the unreleased Sega Genesis/Mega Drive version of the game, with music by the great Tim Follin, who pushed hardware to its limits for games like Solstice and Silver Surfer for NES, or Plok! for SNES.

I'm a sucker for art books, so here's some stuff I've picked up lately: various Magic: The Gathering art books and a couple of graphic novels. While I've not gone through each book the whole way through, I'd still like to share some initial thoughts on each.

Tremors is a wonderful slice of monster movie Perfection. (Nevada) A tight balance of comedy and horror.

But I'm a Cheerleader is one strange movie, but it's certainly charming and it actually ends with a gay couple that doesn't split up. Imagine that.

Reservoir Dogs is a good movie that would be better if Tarantino had someone else write the dialog.

Airplane! is possibly the funniest movie ever. I'm serious. And don't call me Shirley.

Internet funny man Neil Cicierega has made plenty of great things over the years: The Ultimate Showdown of Ultimate Destiny, Potter Puppet Pals, Ariel Needs Legs, etc. Here he created lighthearted pop about strange subjects, such as reanimating a pop star, Lovecraftian love, and Gef the talking mongoose. Standouts include "Touch-Tone Telephone," "Sweet Bod," and "Reaganomics."

The Hanoi, Vietnam-based Mukang Fields call themselves a "space jazz groove trio," which is both accurate and misleadingโ€”accurate, in that their music is a very synth-heavy, spacious jazz; misleading, in that it has nothing to do with the awful "Space Jazz: The soundtrack of the book Battlefield Earth" by L. Ron Hubbard. ๐Ÿ˜†

Some fun jams here with synths, sax, flute, and throat singing.

Instrumental hip-hop/trip-hop/plunderphonics masterpiece. "Building Steam With a Grain of Salt" samples another album from yesterday's AOTD artist Mort Garson. Between this album sampling Prince of Darkness and Psyence Fiction sampling Jacob's Ladder, I'm convinced DJ Shadow has good taste in movies. ๐Ÿ˜†

Ween correctly set expectations by following up the opening Motรถrhead tribute "It's Gonna Be a Long Night" with the relaxed psychedelia of "Zoloft." What follows is an album that bounces around a bit before mellowing out, all with an underlying sadness from Gener's divorce from his long-time partner.

2000 rap opera concept album. I'm generally not big on rap, but between catchy beats and some very unconventional (and nerdy) subject matters, this album is definitely an exception for me. The first song alone mentions Neuromancer, Ghost in the Shell and The Matrix. Wonderful stuff.

I've played Spirit Island five times so far this month! A thread with some thoughts:

I integrated Nature Incarnate into my existing Folded Space insert, but not without lid lift on both base game and Jagged Earth boxes. But hey, everything for Spirit Island in two boxes!

Towering Roots of the Jungle felt underwhelming. It can prevent blight, but also prevents anything from being damaged where your Incarna is. It didn't help I had to focus on defending... (1/4)

(Purple pieces, and the green Vitality tokens.)
