I don't know if this is generational or just bad manners.
I was contacted by a professional in an area that happens to interest me, asking me a series of questions and generally picking my brain. I responded within a couple of hours, though I wasn't able to do all they requested, which was quite a lot considering they were being paid and I'm not.
Since then, not a word. No response, thanks or anything. It seems rather rude.
Is that just an old man grump or /also/ an old man grump?

I've done nothing else all day but get annoyed with non-functioning ‘remote secretariats’ of platforms and run after someone who can't manage to update a few important lines on their website. And I'm supposed to start a new project in the embroidery club tonight. Where can I buy creativity quickly? I'll take a club for the stone age feelings too. 😈

Folk might be interested to know that across the month of May, Sustainable Fashion Week’s campaign invites people to mend one piece of clothing, celebrating repair as an act of empowerment.

I think I'll have a go at my pile. If anyone wants to share mending projects or pics, that'd be lovely.

Das ist, als würde Putin sagen, er sorge sich um den Frieden in der Welt. Oder als sagte Trump, er sorge sich um irgendeinen anderen Amerikaner als sich selbst.

@jensclasen Das Problem in Medien ist nicht, dass solche Leute grundsätzlich lügen.
Das Problem ist: Muss ich diejenigen einladen? (Hart aber fair macht mit Aufregern/Polarisierung Quote).
Das zweite Problem: Ordne ich das vor dem Publikum sofort richtig ein, entlarve ich die Lügen?

Es gab mal ein legendäres BBC-Interview mit Trump, wo der Interviewende Trump exzellent und elegant in alle Einzelteile zerlegt hat. Sowas brauchen wir.
De-Talkmaster (Ausnahmen Phoenix/3sat) können das oft nicht.

@LThiry Ich schau diese und ein paar andere deutsche Talkshows grundsätzlich nicht an.

Deren einziges Ziel ist Quote durch Aufreger/Polarisation. Das ist echt der Plan. Und sie erreichen ihr Ziel, wie man hier auch sieht: Selbst Leute, die keine Fans sind, bringen genau das unter die Leute.

Das hört nur auf, wenn wir in Social media diese Aufmerksamkeitsökonomie nicht mehr bedienen u. lieber die Zitate/Menschen posten, die sie entlarven.

When published its update "April 2024 was warmer globally than any previous April in the data record" I heard it in a casual radio message, followed by an update on football.

Even though I have to deal with professionally, the realization that we are in an uncharted climate territory does not make it any less mind-boggling. Casually mentioning this unfolding threat to our civilization in between the really relevant news and sports borders with denialism.

@TatianaIlyina 1/2 As a journalist who has also worked with communications for a long time, I am very happy when this news is also included in the mainstream at prime time.

This is the only way we can reach people who don't watch specialist documentaries or special programmes (which also have their purpose). Only when people understand the context of why they sweat more at football than they used to, these news reach the general population. You can then build on that.

@TatianaIlyina 2/2 "casually" can often shock better than an alarm article. Even if catastrophes seem to sell better, it's an old lesson in journalism: if you show brutal things too often, use superlatives too often, intensify things too often, it dulls the reader. It is therefore important to keep changing the storytelling. People are currently overwhelmed by bad world news. It's not easy to stop them from switching off completely.
This has nothing to do with denialism. I like it!

@TatianaIlyina We are absolutely of the same opinion! And I'm a big fan of , which is unfortunately completely underrepresented in Germany.
The problem is only: The pure news have to be reduced to some short facts with a hint: "this is a sign of climate crisis" (like the result of the football game or the number of dead in a shooting).
For deepening this we have different formats outside the news. And there it depends very much on the inhouse politics, unfortunately.

One of the things I have been thinking about is how much discourse is stunted by the idea that “I know better than you.” We see it on Mastodon and other social media sites, but we also see it in life, especially if we are a member of an under-represented, marginalized, or minority group.

This one-upmanship crowds out sharing and can make people afraid to voice their opinion or experience due to risk of policing, shaming, condescension, or any of the other ways that people try to demonstrate power over others.

I think it’s worth remembering that we’re all doing life in our own way. We all have something of value to share, and we’re all experts in our own situation.

I'm curious what others' thoughts are about this.

Your last question: It depends on the situation, especially in real life. In social media: I don't feed the troll and block immediately. If someone insists, I have nice meme pics for mansplainers or this: 🖕 (before blocking). In social media you can't debate it.

My worst situation IRL: a big tourist group, elderly people, a problematic couple. They argued, he humiliated his wife in front of everyone. She was completely intimidated, passive, victimised.

@Furthering Training: Never debate with the aggressor but take place beside the victim, show her your support. Fortunately we were 3 guides: We separated the groups. Seemingly by chance, we separated the couple and a colleague took special care of the woman. In an emergency, we have help addresses that we secretly give them.
In my group was the guy. He thought he could get his revenge on me. He constantly interrupted me, knew everything better, (mis) lectured me on everything I was doing.

@Furthering The same thing: don't get involved in debates, that's what these men want. I looked at him penetratingly and absolutely calmly. Then I turned to the group (not him) and said: "It rarely happens, but today we have an exceptional specialist among us. I have an idea. The gentleman will now take my lead for 5 minutes and tell us XY. And I can finally go to the toilet! But I still want to hear the beginning."
XY was a complicated completely invented problem that nobody could have known.

@Furthering In his overestimation of himself, he stammered helplessly, finally all eyes on him, finally he could have had power. He stammered and the whole group laughed. From then on he was silent.
And the group had seen: Wow, we can help the woman instead of giving energy into this guy. We are not helpless.
My favourite technique is to focus on the others and show humour. But it's immensely difficult. We were all ready to call it a day.

It's no wisdom, just training in professions with public because people become more and more aggressive.
You can find different methods even online in centres against violence or for women's protection.
