It may be that in particularly fat fingered, but I find tapping on the “reply” and “boost” icons quite difficult on @IceCubesApp. I often end up opening the link/image several times before getting it right. Is it just me?

@Garwboy they’re looking to a future with extreme ocean rises caused by climate change. Octonauts is in fact dystopian sci-fi.

"About three times a day, Rich Benoit gets a call to his auto shop, The Electrified Garage, from the owner of an older Tesla Model S whose car battery has begun to fail. The battery, which used to provide several hundred miles of range, might suddenly only last 50 miles on a single charge. These cars are often out of warranty, and the cost of replacing the battery can exceed $15,000."

Nicovel0,

@hembrow the motor assembly for my e-bike isn’t made anymore, afaik, so if it breaks it’s likely the whole bike becomes landfill. And this isn’t some eBay container no brand, it’s a Shimano powered Gazelle! I was also quoted nearly £500 for a Gazelle supplied replacement battery. Makes sense to crack open and source battery elements myself at that price.

Nicovel0,
@Nicovel0@mastodon.social avatar

@hembrow it’s still working fine, although I realise now how lucky I was to get the motor replaced under warranty early. I’m going to work the battery into nothing before I risk breaking it open.

ChrisMayLA6, to Energy
@ChrisMayLA6@zirk.us avatar

We are told that the involvement of the private sector (in this case in markets) allows them to price in risk more effectively... so how is it that now consumer debts to energy firms have passed £3bn, it is customers who are be subject to a surcharge to cover these 'losses'?... surely, the firms should have priced this risk in already?

Well, the answer is actually, this is just another disguised subsidy to their , to ensure that don't have to stomach that loss... but we do

Nicovel0,
@Nicovel0@mastodon.social avatar

@ChrisMayLA6 the usual privatise profits but socialise losses. As old as capitalism itself.

I was told by a neighbour this morning that I am "the right kind of immigrant".

When asked to explain he said that I work and pay taxes. He didn't also say that I'm ok because I'm white but I wonder how the conversation would have gone if I had a different skin colour.

Am I reassured that because i am "the right kind of immigrant" everything will now be fine in the Netherlands after a quarter of the people who live around me just voted for a fascist, when the new speaker in our parliament is a conspiracy theorist as well as a fascist, and when most of the rest of the country appears to think that this is just fine ? No I am not.

I have more in common with asylum seekers and any other immigrants than I do with fascists or with unthinking voters for fascists.

@hembrow during the Brexit referendum campaign I chatted with a neighbour who assured me it wouldn’t be a problem for “people like me”, it was all those refugees they had a problem with. When I said “like my wife?” he realised he hadn’t quite thought things through.

Michelle Donelan was in Brussels yesterday to formally sign-up to the UK re-entering the EU's research programme.

Now, the Govt. is going to spend up to £10k per organisation to help them (re)attract & prepare bids for the rest of the programme's duration.

So essentially, we've held out for a better deal (which we didn't get), but due to 's dithering, we now have to 'pump prime' appplicants who are out of the habit of applying and/or have lost key staff

idiocy!

@Sheencr @ChrisMayLA6 and for the few years that the U.K. was out of Horizon the EU redirected funding to south and east Europe, that’s not coming back. Neither are the groups that moved wholesale.

I grew up reading Heinlein novels too; the difference (I think) is that I learned (a) how to read critically and (b) that Heinlein loved to play fake-out mind games using unreliable narrators, to study ideological positions he didn't necessarily agree with but enjoyed playing with. Oh, and (c) he had some weird unexamined cognitive biases.

Another week at the & 's role as useful idiot has been confirmed with 'witnesses' lining up to say he was an idiot, not be trusted & generally incompetent.

So his utility is now coming into focus as the lightning rod (sacrificial lamb?) for ... as more & more is laid at his door, the rest of the shambles will try to hide in the shadow that casts.

But lets be clear: there is blame enough to go around & be shared.

I think the only one that got it right was Japan, possibly a handful of other Asian countries and some in Africa. Their problem was getting hold of vaccines (still is).
