When I was a kid, our calendars had holidays marked out in red: a red letter day was a special one, worthy of standing out from the rest of the week.

Some days spontaneously turn into red letter days, regardless of what the calendar says. These are days of joy and freedom, enjoyed with family and friends.

Rocks and cliffs look pretty permanent. Mist does not. And yet mist, with its ethereal nature, is a reminder that even the rocks and cliffs have a lifespan, and given enough time, they will change and alter, disappear, even as mist does.

Golden glow on the horizon is not cold hoarded metal, locked away in a vault by a miser.

Rather, it is a gift from nature, a fleeting glimpse of beauty that is set before all eyes to see. You cannot cache it, stockpile it, or steal it from others. Nature's gifts, with which she has filled the earth, are meant for all to enjoy and share.

Waves against the rocks

Reach up into the beach sand

Then slowly recede.

The mesmerizing sound and sight of the sea capture the imagination, and I stand amazed at how quickly the minutes flow by as I watch. The surf foams as it tickles the rocks, then recedes quickly back into the arms of the sea.

Never underestimate the power of well written fiction.

Unlike non-fiction, which reportedly just deals with facts, novels touch upon universal human experiences: love, hate, fear, courage, apathy, determination, in a story fashion that prompts us to think of our own lives and how we, as a protagonist, move through our circumstances.

In the U.S., we are taught from a young age that efficiency is supreme: our job is to work quickly, accurately, productively -- kind of like a machine.

But efficiency lacks in creativity, thought, and soul. It is a straight freeway bypassing scenery for time. The winding roads, though not quick, invite us to BE in in both moment and place.

People's individuality comes out beautifully in the music they like, the artwork they gravitate toward, the clothes they prefer, the food that gives them pleasure.

How limiting the world would be if we all thought and believed exactly the same. 100 percent agreement isn't only unrealistic, it's also rather dull.
