High tech, gleaming chrome, minimalist and grey is a trend in some quarters, but not in others. It is a testament to our unique individuality that we gravitate toward what pleases us, what brings us joy.

And for some, it's a joyous explosion of flowers and ruffles, soft fabric and quiet pastels.

Social media gives the mistaken impression that we "know" a lot of people, but to truly know someone -- their depth, richness, personality, and character -- requires spending actual time with them in a time and space of reality.

When we do, we may find that we like some people more than we thought we would.

A still, quiet place,

Surrounded by rugged strength

Where fear doesn't reign.

Imagine if there were no wild areas where one could escape, where one can marvel at and contemplate a view that was not built by corporations or governments. Nature's power lies in her beauty and timelessness.

On a late afternoon in Orvieto, Italy, the shadows grow. Within the homes, warm lights send their welcoming glow to travelers passing by.

Should one pass to the right, or the left? It's not a political question, a false binary meant to divide people, but rather, a very real choice. Because going straight, unless you have a key to the door, isn't an option.

Flowers come in so many shapes, colors, sizes, forms -- like human beings, they refuse to be classified into tight, boxed-in categories. Their sheer beauty and exuberance spills out of any vase you arrange them in, and they add interest and intrigue to their surroundings without saying a single word.

There's an entire city out there, filled with people. But out of all those people, they found each other: he is the one for her; and she is the one for him.

Throughout life, they'll brush shoulders with all sorts of people, but the one they'll hold close, real close, is each other.

Don't go inside yet.

Wait for sunset to be done.

Greet the night with peace.

Twilight, eventide, dusk, the gloaming hour -- we have so many ways of describing sunset, a time of calmness and contemplation that literally provides a beautiful end to the day.

Long before the United Nations, through UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization) pronounced it as a place of historical and artistic significance, Matera, Italy, earned the right to be noticed simply because it has been continuously lived in -- by real people -- for more than 9,000 years.

Not in a hurry.

Today, I will take my time

And enjoy the view.

All roads lead someplace but not all at the same pace. And that's a good thing to remember when we find ourselves on the leisurely, winding roads of a country landscape. We won't get to where we're going quickly, but if we're wise, we'll enjoy the process.

The interesting thing about this building is that, essentially, it's just a large box -- but it is the little things, the details throughout, that prevent it from being so.

Built in 1876, the Columbia County Courthouse exhibits a craftsmanship that today's minimalist, "efficient" structures often lack.

My wife and I had been visiting the Oregon Coast for more than 20 years before we discovered Cook's Chasm, a magical rocky outcrop replete with foaming geysers, channels filled with crashing waves, and Thor's Well, a veritable sinkhole that at high tide bubbled with wave activity.

"How did we miss this?" we asked.

Built by Nature, not human governments or corporations, these rock walls are not designed to keep people out or walled in.

Rather, they inspire us to stop and concertedly Look at them, to marvel at their majesty and strength, to contemplate the many wonders of this earth, and how willing Nature -- unlike a particular class of humans -- is willing to share them with us.

I'm looking for change.

Elections will not bring it,

But seeking truth will.

Change doesn't come about from a fresh new ruler. Or even a tired old leftover. Because rulers don't effect change for good, for humanity.

Change comes when real people live with integrity, treating others as they wish to be treated themselves.

When the world outside is completely white (as mine is right now), it's difficult to picture the many colors of the landscape, especially in spring or autumn.

That's the beauty of the seasons, and the weather -- neither is stagnant, static, stuck, nor frozen. They are dynamic and alive.

Late autumn, winter, early spring -- there are months in the temperate zones when many trees are leafless, their bare bones of trunk and branches exposed for all to see.

On a late afternoon, with sunset approaching, the sun's rays cast a resonating glow onto the tree's form, calling out for us to stop and wonder at its detail and strength.

All seasons have their beauty.

True gold, the real gold

Isn't a cold, hard metal,

But glows with rich warmth.

Nature's greatest gifts -- sunlight, water, clean air, quiet, calmness, and the stateliness of trees -- are there for all to enjoy.

All people need a home, and the world is a big enough place that this should not be a problem.

The problem comes when some people determine that they want other people's homes and resources, and in order to get that, those other people have to leave, or be removed.

From ancient history to current events, the plot of the story hasn't changed.

Experience does not come overnight. Neither does skill.

When we focus on doing something we enjoy -- putting our mental and physical energy to its success, concentrating our intellect upon it -- we derive enjoyment and satisfaction from the process.

It doesn't matter what it is -- it's gratifying. Which means . . . it's not a bad idea to do this more.

We've all met "battery drainers" -- people who draw emotional energy from us by their negative, fearful, or pessimistic outlook on life.

But sometimes, we are our own drainers, when we allow our thoughts to run around in fear, or constantly doubt our ability to question and think. Why dwell in winter's darkness, when spring beckons?

For days the blue waters of the Adriatic Sea had been calm and still, but on this day, a storm was brewing. Wind whipped up the waves, and clouds grew and grew until they appeared to fill the sky.

It looked like rain was on its way, but she wasn't ready to leave yet. Nature was putting on too good of a show.

Where land and water meet, there is great energy, and both rocks and water hold their own against one another.

I think the same can be for people with differing ideas -- there is great energy, maybe a little crashing against one another, but both can manage to come away from the encounter without falling apart into little pieces, or drying up in a puddle.
