There's absolutely zero stress or hurry, both for the sailors on their crafts and for the person watching them (that would be you) from the rocky beach.

The rich turquoise hue of this lake isn't "supposed" to be at such a high alpine location, because as everyone knows, turquoise is a color reserved for the tropics.

Except when it isn't. Nature never limits herself to what she is supposed to do, but does what she does. And on this day, she decided that she liked the color turquoise and was going to use it.

I like that attitude.

Given a choice of where we'd like to be, where is that place?

Rare, I believe, is the person who would choose a place of stress and anxiety, noise and tumult.

There is a reason we seek escape -- figurative and literal -- and no matter how often we're told that we should be happy with where we're told to be, our hearts seek out harmony, stability, calmness and peace.

It's easy to get in such a hurry that we don't notice the landscape around us -- which is boldly, loudly in a visual way, trying to get our attention.

On our life's road we can have the same experience. While we have ambitions and goals -- which is a good thing -- it can be easy to focus on them so strongly that we don't notice the landscape around us.

Representational paintings tell a story. I, as the artist, start the tale with an idea, a thought, a feeling that then, behind the easel, develops into the beginning of the story.

But it is the viewer who takes the next step and adds to, modifies, ripens and unfolds that story. And each viewer, being unique, tells a unique story.

Is there a path?

Well, there appeared to be one a minute ago, maybe, sort of. But now it just looks like some leftover water from high tide. Which may not matter if my plan is to make it to the sea . . .

Life at the beach is a constant reminder of the temporal nature of things: what was there last night may disappear without a trace by morning.

Is there such thing as a Great Awakening? I suspect that if there were, it would be quickly taken over by the authorities of the day and reconfigured to their satisfaction.

Quite fortunately, awakenings happen every day, one by one in individuals, as we see a truth, a light we had not been aware of before.

It's a hidden, secret enclave a couple kilometers from Polignano a Mare on the eastern coast of Italy, although to the locals, it's not so secret.

A prime spot for swimming and boating, the Cala Port'Alga Cove is the perfect location to spend a sunny afternoon in. Bring some water and a lunch, and you're all set.
