I can tell when I need to lower the volume of something I'm listening to when I feel a kind of tightening in my ear muscles, and/or ringing in my ears, or a slight feeling of stress coming in from my environment.

I also just try to remember to always proactively lower the volume a couple ticks from what i first set it at, to prevent all those sensations.

What are the signs for you that things are a little too loud?

@dave @dyani @actuallyautistic I have a friend who used to do long distance driving for a living (amongst other things were transplant organs and other time criticals) and he had 3 playlists set up on his music device (ipod I think) one was catchy tunes for motorways and to stay awake, one was softer to stay alert and one was very soft to blanket out other distractions for when he really needed to concentrate.

This week I've been mainly reading, no. 153.

Each of Emma Newman's Planetfall quartet explores a different aspect of the same overarching story of religious driven intergalactic migration. In Atlas Alone (2019), the fourth story centres on an elite gamer & their attempt to uncover & then take revenge for a crime against humanity. To say much more would ruin the plot for you, but as with the others, this is great, fascinating sci-fi, which has a great payoff at the end.

Everyone is talking about building very large for energy storage, for when the sun doesn't shine or the wind doesn't blow. Turns out, that is the most expensive solution. There are faster solutions that yield money.

"Lovins and many other experts have spent decades pointing out that an integrated system approach that focuses as much or more on consumption than supply will be so much cheaper than the current approach focused on supply."

https://reneweconomy.com.au/worlds-biggest-grids-could-be-powered-by-renewables-with-little-or-no-storage-if-we-are-smart-enough/

Thebratdragon,
@Thebratdragon@mastodon.scot avatar

@CelloMomOnCars the main reason for energy storage is to allow for sudden demand surges, aat the moment this is done by ramping up the turbines in oil/coal/gas/etc power stations. Without storage of some kind it is much harder to ramp up wind/solar, even Nuclear is slow to ramp up (due to reaction times etc.)

Thebratdragon,
@Thebratdragon@mastodon.scot avatar

@CelloMomOnCars one of the cheapest is being done in Finland storing energy as heat in sand, which is cheap, easy to obtain and has few environmental downsides.

Just looked up how I would get to Orkney to visit the friend I met yesterday without flying. It would take 1 day 1 hour by train to get the Thurso to catch the ferry to the islands, going Wales to London, London to Edinburgh, then to Aberdeen, then change at Inverness for Thurso. Hmm

Britain's record on homelessness is world beating, just not in a good way.

We've the highest recorded levels of homelessness in the developed world; while other counties have seen (albeit slow) declines in homelessness, since 2010 the UK's rate has been accelerating away.

The housing crisis has many dimensions, but here there's a direct correlation between the arrival of the current Tory govt. & massive increases!

The party of landlords is working for them & doing nothing for us!

#housing

Chart: Britain has by far the highest rate of homelessness in the developed world. Rate of homelessness per 10,000 people (2023 or latest). UK - 52/10,000 Belgium & France (next ranked) 32/10,00 then all over states listed (in descending order), below 30/10,000: Czechia (27), Germany (26), USA (19), NZ (13), Australia (12), Canada (10), Portugal (10), Denmark (6), Poland (5), Sweden (5), Spain (5), Norway (3), Finland (1)

Y'all want to hear a fact that really changed the way I thought about homelessness?

Half of all homeless people were in the foster system at some point. Social Workers often call the foster system The Highway to Homelessness. If you ever had a point in your life where you had to live with friends or family to for a short time to get back on your feet, remember that is a privilege that not everyone had.
