Social media often results in lawsuits.

That is to say, when it comes to social media, people can be very "sue happy". They like to sue, often for irrational reasons, and it can be financially draining.

If you plan on operating a Fediverse server with open registrations, I urge you to consult with a lawyer. And to limit your personal liability, you might want to operate it through the aegis of a corporate entity.

@ike @atomicpoet @neil

I am also not a lawyer. However, I know that different forms of businesses provide different levels of liability protection. Partnerships versus incorporation are two broad categories that generally have different liability structures. As always, consult a lawyer in your state for specifics.

    If "of all the people we invited to speak, only white men could come" is even actually true, then it also brings up another big problem.

    Ask WHY only these guys had the:

    • time to take off and go speak at a con
    • money to fly somewhere
    • money to get a hotel room
    • means to probably speak at this conference for no pay

    Almost as if the scales are a WEE bit tipped

    TrillionB,
    @TrillionB@mstdn.social avatar

    @TurnipCannon This is why we need .

    A political party, which is a private organization with no official government relationship, has the right to choose their nominee however they want.

    But the general public, in general elections, should be able to rank their preferences for any number of candidates and win with a true majority. Not worry they will "throw their vote away" and lose to a horrible candidate in a plurality election.

    I know I’ve said this before, but as someone who goes into industrial process environments a lot, the lack in of decent ppe, especially FR gear, that properly and safely fits feminine bodies is a frigging travesty. It’s one of those things that actually leads to a culture of poor safety, because nobody really talks about it - guys typically don’t think about people wearing a bra or hairpins and how they could melt to a person in an industrial accident, and women feel like they have to shut up and be one of the guys. And almost everything that fits better requires a lengthy online order from backstock.

    Anyway if you are planning on working in that space and aren’t a men’s size M-XXL like nearly all the gear, I’m always available to talk.

    TrillionB,
    @TrillionB@mstdn.social avatar

    @hacks4pancakes Visiting different customers as a consultant was eye-opening about different safety cultures.

    The few really good companies, during site check-in, would walk me to a "safety room". It was like walking into a clothing store. Racks and racks of all sizes of PPE. Over-shoes and boots from teeny-tiny thru NBA player sizes, different sizes and types of safety glasses and visors, gloves that didn't cut off the circulation in my hands, etc.

    And women still got shortchanged.

    What do you think of the way "quote" is used in the following sentence? Is it acceptable in formal Standard English?

    He began the chapter with a quote from Carl Sagan.

    I'm not asking if you'd use it yourself. I'm asking if you would tell someone it's wrong if you had been asked to review a document. If you were an editor, would you change it in a press release you were editing, for example.

    TrillionB,
    @TrillionB@mstdn.social avatar

    @grammargirl I'm guessing the distinction is about using "quote" instead of "quotation", but I think that ship has sailed in modern vocabulary.

    We need to have a talk, and I’m having a really hard time having it with my awesome hacker friends, because everyone is super duper emotionally invested and is deeply hurt by it.

    I hope you all aren’t - because it involves all of us and it’s important. It’s not about any of y’all individually or your hard community work.

    The talk is about how to make all of our cybersecurity conferences and events and meetups more accessible and conformable for young hackers because I’mreallysosorry, we’ve somehow become Old, and the stuff that we are ingrained with as “hacker culture” like movies, music, and memes all were created before they were born - and they may or may not have any emotional attachment or enjoyment of them at all.

    That’s the conversation we need to have and that we are all responsible for and I swear it’s not aimed at any conference or person because we are all in this filter bubble of watching the Matrix and listening to Prodigy and remembering the hamster dance and all of that stuff while awesome was like a quarter century ago.

    Part of building a community is thinking about including everyone and their culture under a mantle of good ethics and goals. So we really, really need to start having a chat about when we lean on the 90s hacker aesthetic and memories to the exclusion of people under 30. I had a wake up call hearing some students complaining about it.

    TrillionB,
    @TrillionB@mstdn.social avatar

    @hacks4pancakes I remember this with music as a teen.

    "What?! You don't know (band whose big hit was the year I was born)?! How can you like (genre) if you don't listen to (guy we now know was a serial abuser)?"

    The best was, "Why are you trying to sound like (genre star from 15 years prior)? You're just being a poser!"

    If new people can't enjoy current stuff and contribute new things & new takes on classics, the community will die.
