OK guys, A City on Mars is out.

https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/639449/a-city-on-mars-by-kelly-and-zach-weinersmith/

Heretofore I've had to hold back a bit on discussing it, but now the book is going out into the world, so Ask Me Anything about space settlement: science, politics, law, historiography, etc. I'll do my best to answer.

My good friends @ZachWeinersmith and Kelly Weinersmith wrote an amazing book and you should read what I wrote about why you should read what they wrote.

Niche gripe: pop sci books that cite a psych study and say something like "people who [x] are more likely to [y]" without mentioning the effect size, and then treat the result as if it's a statement about humanity. Like, in science a 3% increase is HUGE, but probably doesn't mean a lot about how to think about humans at large.

@ZachWeinersmith a nice visual illustration of that:

Should be a fun read. Book by Kelly and @ZachWeinersmith

"Blending in history, law, and psychology alongside the hard sciences, the book gives a frank and honest summary of the field. It could have been the research notes for an Ursula K. Le Guin, or a James S. A. Corey story, except that it’s filled with jokes, palette cleansing anecdotes and charming cartoon illustrations."

One of my fantasy uses for future AI is that it could read every book and watch every bit of film and then embed that information to locations on Earth for lookup. E.g. I was reading "Chips" Channon's diaries, and so a famed MP at one point shit himself on accident and you could probably stand in the exact spot where it happened:

@ZachWeinersmith Apparently India House was where the Foreign Office is today (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/India_Office - see picture caption), on the corner with Downing Street (where the PM works).

So it would have been a few minutes walk down to the House of Commons. Though if nobody observed it, maybe he managed to make it inside the building before filling his trousers?

For those interested, today's congressional shitshow is now being voted upon: https://www.c-span.org/video/?531158-1/house-session&live

The chyron appears to be writing a rap about it.

Probably a good career move in case this whole Congress thing doesn't work out.

Just a reminder that private American citizens can now sponsor refugees for resettlement:

Not everyone has the means, but if you do, it might be worth thinking about.

Best review I could've hoped for: https://afuse8production.slj.com/

The combination of "it's super weird" and "there's no marketing hook" and "it's really good" is exactly what I dreamed of for Bea Wolf.

So I can't talk too much about what's IN the book yet, because that's how publishing works, but like... there is now every single day an article that is basically wrong, or treating a question as mysterious when there are actual answers, about space settlement. Please consider reading if these things interest you: https://www.penguinrandomhouse.com/books/639449/a-city-on-mars-by-kelly-and-zach-weinersmith/
