So despite climate change, Australia's federal government has just committed an extra $3.25 billion into building a toll road and a 20-lane freeway widening.

For those who wonder why Aussies think toll roads are a scam (https://aus.social/@LesserAbe@lemmy.world/112405373613706682), here's a great example of why.

"Pouring an extra $3.25 billion worth of federal funds into Melbourne’s North East Link is a good use of taxpayer money, Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has insisted, despite the project’s cost doubling just a few months ago.

...

"The North East Link – which includes 6½ kilometres of tunnels – will stretch from Bulleen to Greensborough. It will widen the Eastern Freeway by up to 20 lanes.

"Allan revealed in December that the 10-kilometre toll road had more than doubled in cost since it was first announced.

"The toll road was initially budgeted at $10 billion and reassessed in 2019 at $15 billion. But the government revealed last year that the updated cost estimate was $26 billion."

"The Why Files" is a youTube channel that regularly has videos with over a million views. They started as a kind of paranormal/fringe science channel that was mostly harmless, and that often debunked conspiracies.

But, they've moved beyond that in to material such as suppressed patents for cars that run on water. And treating climate change like it's a unresolved question. This has made their audience grow.

The things is they aren't just spitting lies. 1/

@futurebird @GiddingsMJ They don't need everyone to be hooked on. A few will be more than enough payoff.

I got my dad to watch Aussie football off a shady streaming service many years ago (maybe 15?). Told him to ignore the ads and not to click on them. (This was before ad blockers were a big thing). Anyway they ended up paying $250 for a "Mac virus cleaner" that was total shit. Had to wipe their computer. Then told him to pay the $150/yr fee from the AFL to watch games.

    My sense of smell has gotten a lot better in the last few years (don't ask me why, but probably NOT working in an office). That said, taking a walk around the neighborhood you know how the dogs must feel.

    "Ah, Amazon driver with too much cologne passed here an hour ago. PU!"

    "Hmm, looks like that teenager girl with way too much perfume walked this way"

    "Oh, the neighbors took a shower about 10 minutes ago"

That's actually not very good; it's not even nice. It puts me in 68th place among all tracked runners (of which there are only 88). Still, it's something! Lately, I have read a lot of people complain that people did not care about .

    I believe this statement to be wrong, I think most people care but they do not see how their actions could make a difference.

    We have proven that we could reach out to people about the because people care.

    Now there is a question I would like to ask all of you: Do you remember what or who got you interested in composting? What made you care for it?

    afterconnery,
    @afterconnery@en.osm.town avatar

    @compost a few things. Food scraps could be transformed by things I can't see that actually underlie so much of our existence. This compost could help grow food and help the ground retain more water. Food in the landfill produces methane so we should obviously keep it out.

    But the main reason is we were tired of our garbage smelling like shit. Compost our food and now there isn't a wretched smell :)

    Over recent months a mutual and I agree on a lot.

    I just reread a thread in which he gets accused of having “an anti-urbanist agenda”. Given the context, that accusation is effectively being levelled at me too. But here’s the thing.

    I’ve lived in 1 large conurbation and 2 cities for 40 years. I like living in the city I’m in now.

    I also recognise that the probability is very very high that cities like the ones I live in and have lived in are utterly unsustainable…

    afterconnery,
    @afterconnery@en.osm.town avatar

    @urlyman @HeavenlyPossum but what is a city if not the people who live there? The context of the conversation centers around people and the use of their resources. When Jack mentions rural areas he means rural people in those areas. If people have a hard time understanding what he is saying he should try to explain himself in a different way. People had questions for him and he would rather throw articles at them instead of answering questions or explaining himself better.

    afterconnery,
    @afterconnery@en.osm.town avatar

    @urlyman @HeavenlyPossum I also am not particularly interested in "intellectuals" who offer nothing more than "knowledge" in an area. What are we to do with this new knowledge? How can we give people agency so that they don't feel utterly hopeless with this dooming scenario? Cities are going to have it worse in the years to come. What can city dwellers do to make this transition work for the human race? All Jack wants to do is spout off shit he's read somewhere and nothing more.

    afterconnery,
    @afterconnery@en.osm.town avatar

    @urlyman since we have unfollowed each other now this will be my last thought on this topic. Some of us had issues with Jacks portrayal of urbanites, summarized here: https://mas.to/@jackofalltrades/112133626258185236. While I agree that modern cities will not last as is the problem of overshoot is an everyone problem. Modern cities are a symptom of human insatiable appetite for consuming resources : https://en.osm.town/@afterconnery/112133775306629206

    https://en.osm.town/@afterconnery/112127921275079753

    The idea of human beings as rational utility-maximizing particles with insatiable hedonic desires is very much the product of an ideological project to justify capitalism as “natural” and has virtually no relationship to how actual human beings live but a lot of people have genuinely internalized it.

    Trying to derive “human nature” by observing people under capitalist modernity is like looking at a bored, depressed wolf obsessively pacing a circle in a tiny zoo enclosure and concluding that this is “wolf nature.”

    afterconnery,
    @afterconnery@en.osm.town avatar

    @HeavenlyPossum I have also read that in certain first nation cultures if resources were getting low for the community the elderly would go off on their own and basically die so that they wouldn't take the resources away from younger generations.

    inquiline, to disability
    @inquiline@union.place avatar

    I am particularly irritated at a couple bigger-account "urbanists"/transpo people for not using alt text.

    In addition to disregarding needs of disabled people here, this tells us that you aren't willing to listen to/learn the norms & values of the community you're in; & that you do not consider routinely regarding disabled people's needs as your responsibility.

    Both of which are very shitty given the line of work you're in.

    afterconnery,
    @afterconnery@en.osm.town avatar

    @beadsland @inquiline @M0YNG I find a similarity in the Doomer/Collapse-Aware/ClimateChange crowd. Its a bunch of heady/article-infused information, but little on what to actually do about it. Like there is a lot to do even though it won't solve a lot of the problems. But they would rather have a following by being a spigot without much substance.

    afterconnery,
    @afterconnery@en.osm.town avatar

    @inquiline @beadsland @M0YNG I think it might be hard to do examples because it is boring shit that makes a huge difference. Like tracking your electric and gas usage and then figuring out ways to use less. Ride a bike or walk more. Stop buying so much shit you don't need. Grow something.

    For a lot of people its not enticing and its actual work to think and plan and act all the time even when they're tired. Especially when we have been conditioned to be lazy and let the system do it for us.

    The funniest thing about Donald Trump is that he is so routinely honest in public—“I will be a dictator,” “there will be violence if I lose”—and yet the majority of people are so concerned about decorum, so terrified of appearing to overreact, that the American political system just plods along as if he hadn’t said what he said.

    afterconnery,
    @afterconnery@en.osm.town avatar

    @jackofalltrades @HeavenlyPossum @jlou @thesquirrelfish but if people all use the same resources then it doesn't matter if it is city or rural. Cars, roads, gas, air conditioners, solar panels, food, restaurants, gadgets, etc. gets used by people in cities or in the sticks. Just because people are in close proximity in cities doesn't mean they use more than those in the sticks. What your saying makes more sense in Global South and Global North terms, but not with cities and rural.

    afterconnery,
    @afterconnery@en.osm.town avatar

    @jackofalltrades @Loukas @HeavenlyPossum @thesquirrelfish @jlou Having mega cities is a symptom of overshoot. Cities aren't inherently the problem as you seem to be dancing around. Cities were around before global overshoot and will be after. Ending capitalism also wont end overshoot, it just exacerbates it. The only way to truly end overshoot is more people die than are born.

    afterconnery,
    @afterconnery@en.osm.town avatar

    @jackofalltrades @Loukas @HeavenlyPossum @thesquirrelfish @jlou what is your definition of coercion then? I have seen/read plenty of people/towns being persuaded to do things not in their best interest. There wasn't a threat of force (violence/coercion) but the end result was a willful acceptance, granted not in their favor. You seem to see cities only as a violent existence with no hope of being anything other than violent and thereby equating rural or hunter-gatherers as non-violent.

    afterconnery,
    @afterconnery@en.osm.town avatar
