There's so much spam across mastodon servers now. Incredible:( even blocking domains isn't really slowing it down

alsutton,
@alsutton@snapp.social avatar

@paul How does the spam reach you? Is it via mentions, or some other channel?

The recent security patches for Mastodon are related to spoofing posts, so Iโ€™m wondering if someone is abusing that on unpatched servers.

I'm writing about the Mac's 40th anniversary and need some help with a basic question:

What specific tech products still in general use have been around for MORE than 40 years?

(So far, I can think of one obvious example and one less obvious one.)

@harrymccracken Toyota Land Cruisers are complex machines which have been around for more than 70 years; https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Toyota_Land_Cruiser

If you live with a , please make yourself aware of the symptoms of respiratory tract infections so you know when to pay closer attention to them.

After finding our cat wheezing and struggling to breath in the morning, and then making a very anxious trip to an animal hospital, I can tell you being able to provide a timeline of symptoms makes identifying an effective treatment a lot easier.

There's a good article at

@jbqueru What Iโ€™m reading indicates that the move to will be a long term thing because folk arenโ€™t going to switch mid, or late on, in a project, so Iโ€™d say jump in.

I've been racking my brain with GDPR. It's not that I just want to serve 5 terabytes, actually I just want to store 5 high scores in an NES game, but the legal implications for privacy are really hairy.

Today was the day that I found the line in the docs which explains how to get decent I/O performance in guest OS's which are I/O heavy (e.g. CI servers).

TLDR; sudo xl sched-credit2 -d Domain-0 -w 512

It's only slightly annoying that the Xen docs are incorrect (they refer to the old schedule credit system which isn't the default any more), and their Wiki seems to not allow account creation to submit an edit.

So, Twitter just made it harder for us to manage our team account there with the TweetDeck changes, and their API no longer supports our previous crossposting of news on here (hasn't since May). 30k followers there vs 700+ here. We're debating what to do (obviously, a Fedi future is on the table), but meanwhile, let us just say "May the Force be with you" and let you know we're still alive and haven't forgotten about Mastodon and the Fediverse. On the contrary.

alsutton,
@alsutton@snapp.social avatar

@swbooks What would you need to go all-in on Mastodon? It looks like you could give app developers a great insight into what folk need to become

alsutton, to random
@alsutton@snapp.social avatar

There are a couple of behaviours I look for from senior devs;

  1. Reporting problems with ideas about causes. Saying "X doesn't work" when you've seen it fail is useful, but saying "X doesn't work, and I think it may be because of Y" can open the door to learning about things that may be useful in future projects.

  2. Thinking about migration. It's relatively easy to write new code, but working out how to get users to use it without a lot of work on their side makes adoption far more likely.

Google has reportedly ended its plans to release "Iris", its next-gen AR glasses, according to Business Insider: https://www.businessinsider.com/google-ar-iris-augmented-reality-smart-glasses-2023-6

Instead, they're pivoting to building an Android XR platform for Samsung's headset as well as a "micro XR" platform for glasses.

alsutton,
@alsutton@snapp.social avatar

@MishaalRahman Meta modified the AOSP for Quest, which means a reasonable amount of VR features they use may not be in the AOSP.

As spotted by @alsutton, Google has been using (https://android.googlesource.com/device/google/tangorpro/+/refs/tags/android-13.0.0_r56/tangorpro/BoardConfig.mk#19) the Pixel Tablet as an Android Automotive OS test device. However, it's not yet possible to build AAOS for the Pixel Tablet as the sources haven't been pushed to AOSP yet.

alsutton,
@alsutton@snapp.social avatar

@MishaalRahman If anyone feels like helping try to recreate what Google have internally for their build, I've put up a local manifest which folk can add to their build and see where we get to;

https://github.com/snappautomotive/firmware-local_manifest

I'm using the target name aosp_tangorpro_car

alsutton,
@alsutton@snapp.social avatar

@MishaalRahman If youโ€™re replaying journey data through a tablet with an AAOS build on it, then those things are less of a concern ;) https://remotivelabs.com/how-volvo-cars-advance-their-aaos-development/

Second time in a year Iโ€™ve done a 500+km drive in a day with my wife.

In our car we used to swap a couple of times at service stations along the way, and then arrive pretty tired.

In the we have a couple of ~30min charging stops and arrive feeling a lot less drained.

Iโ€™m reasonable sure the needed 30mins break actually mean weโ€™re driving better (due to a decent rest stops), which is an unexpected side effect of EV driving. ๐Ÿค”

In all seriousness, the US first nature of is a pattern Iโ€™ve seen so regularly, and for so ling (Since the Google Glass launch), that I regularly call their inclusivity claims bullsh*t.

You donโ€™t get good, inclusive, feedback from one country, especially one which has a high proportion of native English speakers. Proof? Try asking folk with English as a second language about Assistant, or the ease of comprehension for some error messages.
