Pueblo Bonito
Chaco Culture National Historic Park, NM

This view is from the canyon rim accessed via the Pueblo Alto Trail—not for the faint of heart. I reprocessed the original RAW file this morning.

"Pueblo Bonito is the most thoroughly investigated and celebrated cultural site in Chaco Canyon. Planned and constructed in stages between AD 850 to AD 1150 by ancestral Puebloan peoples, this was the center of the Chacoan world. That world eventually covered a vast area of the present-day Southwest, including the San Juan Basin of New Mexico, and portions of Colorado, Utah, and Arizona. For over 300 years, Chacoan Culture united many diverse peoples within its sphere of influence." - NPS

Ha, it was better to be on the Southwest Chief this morning than on the I-40, Amtrak sailed on through Flagstaff without any issues, while truckers are stuck on the I-40 still.

@ai6yr I bet that they get especially gorgeous views from the observation car this morning.

I-40 always sucks!

I just don't get the obsession with Route 66, I guess. Yet another campaign has launched to preserve the memories, etc. $$ are spent marking the old route, etc. Chasing the shrinking geriatric tourist base maybe?

Hell, I'm old, old, old and can barely remember US-66. I bet it was long gone and replaced by I-40 before most folks were even born.

Petroglyph Rock
Johns Canyon Road
Glen Canyon National Recreation Area, UT

This fallen rock, along the jeep trail below Muley Point, has petroglyphs including deer tracks, a bird, two spirals, a snake, and ceremonial anthropomorphic figures. The rock was about 10 feet tall, if I remember correctly.

The thousand foot tall cliff is the southern edge of Cedar Mesa. The road follows a bench below the cliff and above a canyon with the San Juan River another 1200 feet below. (The road has a couple technical sections not for the novice driver.)

A closer view of large sandstone boulder that fell from the thousand foot high orange sandstone cliff eons ago contains two spirals, a snake and three human figures pecked from the black "desert varnish" on the rock. Shown here in situ, it is about 8 feet tall. ©BosqueBill.com

Aha! Found a secret bike path(paved) on Google Maps! Goes past a significant traffic area... most of the path is unmarked but visible in satellite photos. Will have to go there and see where it connects to things. #BikeTooter

A belt sander is useful for more than just sanding. For example, you can use one for testing the output of a generator hub for a bicycle

@MLE_online Generator must be really crude. Is it designed to charge battery? Bet that would even it out.

bosquebill,
@bosquebill@techhub.social avatar

@MLE_online The impedance of a battery is so low, the ripple would likely be filtered out.

ICON forecast for rain on Thursday, February 1st in Santa Barbara and the San Gabriel Valley. Looks like the winds are favorable for producing rain on South facing slopes. Will have to wait a day or two for HRRR to weigh in. Does look like a fairly fast moving storm at the moment. Angeles

Similar screen shot near Altadena, also showing mountains catching rain as the storm front passes.

@jds whenever I see rock formations tilted up like those I imagine titanic forces thrusting them up in some cataclysmic event—the romantic in me, I guess—whereas it probably happened a fraction of an inch at a time over eons.

Five years after giving humanity its first glimpse of a black hole, the astronomy team responsible is back with a new image of M87*

The new image, made with new data, helps confirm the team's original findings and serves as additional evidence for the validity of the theory of relativity.

Pronghorn
Capulin Volcano National Monument, NM

These denizens of the western plains are mistakenly called antelope by most folks. There are no true antelope native to north America.

This mom and young lack the eponymous horns and are looking back at me poking my camera out my truck window.

@ai6yr Just looked back at my original photos and there were a few mule deer in the same vicinity, so the song wasn't making everything up, at least.
