If you are running your own #Mastodon server, perhaps as a trial, and you decide to kill it, can you do one quick tidy up command before you pull the plug?

On the command line: tootctl self-destruct

This will notify the #fediverse that your server is on the way out. Otherwise, servers may try for days to communicate with you.

Thanks

It's great to see so many new people joining various services.

Let's talk about some terminology to help you -- don't worry, we will keep it simple.

The is a word used a lot. Basically, it is a way for lots of social servers to talk to each other and share posts. Like email, we are all on different email servers, but they all communicate.

When you join the fediverse, you pick a server to join. Some servers cater for niche topics. Don't worry, they still talk with the fediverse, but it means your server has people with the same interests as you. Other servers are more general.

There are various server types. Here are a few examples:

Importantly, all these servers talk to each other. So, if you are using Mastodon you can follow someone on Pixelfed and Lemmy and Calckey, all from your one account -- and interact with them too. How great is that?

There are NO computer algorithms in the fediverse to force content on to you. You only see posts from people you follow. So follow lots of people; you can unfollow later.

Do an post to let people know about you. Use the hashtag '' to allow others to browse collective posts and maybe follow you.

You will see I have used the # a lot here. Hashtags help others find similar posts. Use them for key topics in your post.

Don't be afraid to ask for help if you are not sure.

Enjoy, be safe, and be courteous.

I am absolutely loving the browser. There's so many nice extras, but my top three have to be:

  • Built-in mail client -- especially good when I have multiple mailboxes for fediverse services I administer
  • The notepad feature -- I often need to quickly note something down
  • Nice RSS feed reader
  • The team are on the : @Vivaldi

Oh, wait that's four reasons. Oh well.

Hello curious tourists of the ,

Initially we set up this instance as an experiment, however we've adjusted the plans, upgraded the server, and are now live for real worker bees -- like you!

https://iBe.social

We're taking new signups, but doing it slowly to check performance. If you want an invite, just send me a DM and I will get back as quickly as possible. I have a few hives to attend to so it may not be an instant reply. Especially if it's sleepy time in the UK.

Even if you are just curious about CalcKey, by all means give it a try.

Accounts inactive for more than 6 months may be deleted

Our server is running the latest stable version of CalcKey. There are several newer versions but in beta; given the instability of calckey.social just now (the main site for CalcKey) we want to keep a stable version for our little worker bees.

I am delighted to announce that here at iBe Social we have migrated to :sharkey:

Sharkey is a fabulous variation of Misskey, with some great little extras. I hope everyone will enjoy using it as much as we have during our testing phase. We had setup a test server to let our users play around with it to decide if it was what they wanted.

served us well, but it was time to move on to new and exciting things in Sharkey.

Massive kudos to @Amelia who did all the work on the migration. She took an unbelievably impressive 26 minutes to do the migration; I hardly had time to check my honey stocks!

Proud to be part of Sharkey, and open for visitors.

What are we all using for our #CRM system these days?

I'm looking for something open source, cloud based. Ideally self hosted but anything good considered.

It's for a small project I am working on so I don't need something stuffed full of features.

Thanks :bumble:

Calling any :

What's the best way to tidy up the public/system/cache folder in a instance?

My public/system/media_attachments is on 3.3GB.
However, public/system/cache/media_attachments is 22GB!
Similarly, public/system/accounts is 97MB, whereas cache/accounts is 22GB

How should I clear down this massive cache?

I've tried tootctl cache clear but nothing seems to change in the cache folder.

In total the cache folder is 55GB, everything outwith cache consumes only 6GB. It's making my backups massive and long to run.

Any help, or Boosts appreciated.

Over the weekend it appears that some servers were hacked, and security tokens were used to impersonate users and deface posts.

If you are and admin on Lemmy you MUST read this and apply the steps to mitigate the issue: https://lemmy.world/post/1293336

As a user, please contact your admin, or read any announcements, to ensure they have applied the fix.

Are you looking for a new instance in the ?
Simply curious about CalcKey as a different Mastodon?

Perhaps you need a temporary account while the server stability issues are resolved?

We're here for you.

More details below.

Let's hope the boffins at calckey.social resolve their issues soon. We are running the official 'stable' release of the code, rather than a beta version.

Any boosts appreciated

Anyone know if the firefish.community instance is dead?

I have a few hundred entries in the job queue for them. The domain looks to me like it has no DNS entries. I don't want to delete and stop future delivery if it's just having a hiccup

We are excited to launch a test server on the .

Please use it as a playground if you are curious about Sharkey.

This is a TEST server. DO NOT use it as your main account on the fediverse.

We are using it to help us decide how we move forward with the main iBeSocial brand.

It's good what Dansup is doing. Saying that I won't be moving back to pixelfed.social because folks on here have often discussed the idea of a flagship instance being a starter instance and then moving on. We do need more pixelfed instances to showcase federation and spread the load.

Again thanks to @alizasystem for offering a new pixelfed home to me.

https://mastodon.social/@dansup/111617703110836835

bumble,

@onepict @alizasystem Having the mothership instance at the top of the list is always going to drive people there as they can be lazy. Every server type is the same with their own server at the top.

We try to entice people to our Pixelfed instance. Our error may have been making it a little niche, as we hoped to have a group who were linked to Scotland in someway. However, we accept anyone really -- much like Scotland itself 😆

Meet Haai.

They're the mascot for , an instance powered by @Sharkey (cc: @ruud). It's a community of roughly ~120 members, and part of the rapidly growing squad of instances based on this fork.

Haai is also the Dutch word for shark, and also is a homophone for a greeting (Hi!).

Hey, @bumble! I am trying out the bridgyfed bridge to Bluesky... and it works! Yay. Only one thing doesn't work: I can't seem to see interactions (replies and likes) from there on here. While a friend of mine on another (mastodon) server received a reply from Bluesky and this one I do see.

Could this be due to a server setting? (I have no idea tbh, I'm asking just in case you know immediately...)

:blobbee_laptop:

bumble,

@wiase I confess to knowing little in way of the operation of Bridgefed. I assume it uses the Mastodon API? The **Key style instances don't implement it all.

@wiase Keep me updated. I am curious and will do anything I can to help
