What was the first distribution you installed / attempted to install?

For me - a Debian user - it was gentoo, around 2003, which was a mistake.

@cdp1337@social.veraciousnetwork.com avatar

@neil I believe it was RedHat 6.2 running the 2.2 kernel that a friend at the time provided as a copied CD (dial-up was far too slow to even THINK about downloading a 700MB!!!! FILE)

Linux VS Windows

Nick from @thelinuxEXP has done a nice video comparing overall performance of linux vs windows from hardware resource management to gaming.

As expected though linux wins in utilising resources more efficiently for day to day & work related tasks.

However gaming performance comparisons are interesting.

@cdp1337@social.veraciousnetwork.com avatar

@nosherwan @thelinuxEXP Not user friendly, nothing is where I expect it to be, inconsistent UI, installing applications and games is difficult, none of my hotkeys work, I need to use weird CLI commands which make no sense; all the comparison I need..... for why I can't use Windows ;)

Y'know how I like nuance and am skeptical of simple narratives?

Well, I have a bugbear regarding the discussion on pedestrian fatalities in the US.

To start this thread, I'd like to think I have an unbiased perspective here. I don't drive a very large vehicle, I loathe the arms race in vehicle size, and I welcome all efforts to reduce car-dependence and make our streets safer for all.

But... every discussion I listen to on this topic is real handwavey on the impacts of distracted driving.

cdp1337,
@cdp1337@social.veraciousnetwork.com avatar

@TechConnectify You've touched on a "fun" guessing game we play in central Ohio when drivers wander across lanes and occasionally into oncoming traffic, it's called "Drunk or ticktock?"

"No idea, we just memorize pretty pictures on icons. We can't fit labels anywhere because the text negatively impacts the visual feng shui."

And it's just like...Ubuntu with a slightly different desktop environment.

From what little I know of that organization, it seems like they'd fit better on poa st / bae st... Probably get better viewer retention and engagement as well.

@cdp1337@social.veraciousnetwork.com avatar

@killyourfm

Microsoft: "We're going to integrate ML into our public search engine, then upload all users' private content, tax returns, and homemade "movies" into that same ML system"

Yup, wonderful idea. This definitely won't go sideways immediately after roll-out.

cdp1337,
@cdp1337@social.veraciousnetwork.com avatar

@killyourfm My concern is less of your personal data will end up on bing, (though that's certainly a possibility), but more of juice for the ML which will get saved in their database, potentially leading to data leaks.

ie: "How much did so-and-so pay in taxes in 2021?"

For a system that is supposed to be adaptive and responsive based on learned data, this poses difficulties in data management, and part of the reason that my employer (smartly for once), disallows any ML/AI of our internal data.

OK, this project has started its rebranding to 'MarkdownMaster CMS', I figured with the implementation of Promises throughout the system and effectively a rewrite of everything internally, that it was about time to make it be its own project and not just a fork.

Unfortunately I need logo ideas and a default layout and I'm not a designer...

cdp1337,
@cdp1337@social.veraciousnetwork.com avatar

@nosherwan

https://github.com/cdp1337/markdownmaster

It's a Markdown-based CMS which runs entirely in the client's browser. I wanted something where I can upload .md files with NextCloud and just have them immediately available on my website without any build scripts or server-side components.

I'm trying to write up documentation for it now.

Obscure / advice needed: I'm trying to play Torchlight 2 in docked desktop mode, but the mouse cursor in this game is SO TINY.

Is there any way to increase its size? KDE's cursor settings don't seem to apply in-game, and I can't find any Steam workshop mods for this.

Help me retro gamers, you're my only hope!

cdp1337,
@cdp1337@social.veraciousnetwork.com avatar

@killyourfm oooh, that's a hard one. Generally cursors in games are assets in the game files and it's up to the developer to support variable sizes.

One idea I have, try to decrease the resolution of the game to see if that makes a difference.

As a sidenote... retro? RETRO? Torchlight 2 only came out a few.... holy hell 11 years ago... I'm old.

@htdrake's aging iPad is giving out, so she's in the market for a new tablet. Having been radicalized here, we're reluctant to buy a new FAANG machine*. Does anyone have a Linux tablet they love?

This would be mainly for web browsing, occasional email, and some games.

Lately can't even get their mainboards right, something they've been designing+manufacturing for decades. Are folks expecting a more expensive device with a less performant OS to succeed simply due to name recognition?

I recognize lots of folks here don't trust Bluesky, but I actually find a lot of what they're doing really, really interesting and worth watching, including their experiment with "composable moderation." https://www.techdirt.com/2023/04/20/bluesky-plans-decentralized-composable-moderation/

@mmasnick @erlend Ah, ok. It seems that everytime I see 'web3' it's some half-baked crypto/blockchain scam being pushed by a company trying to exploit the community to make a quick buck.

So when are we getting the source code to this bluesky thing?

Awesome, thanks for posting! I'll totally check it out and see what they're up to. (I was completely expecting a response of the typical private trademarked intellectual property corporate BS btw. Legit awesome that they're contributing anything under MIT.)

I'll make my leave by contributing this totally unrelated link in here... ;)
