man, nothing drains my motivation like frustration. even though the PCB saga is likely resolved, which should be a cause for celebration, I'm just wiped out by it and haven't written a single bit of code today.

@drahardja You can't say all vendors, customers, employers are employees as a group are not loyal. Sometimes you build relationships with great people and organizations. I don't know anything about , but based on their CEO's antics, I would not be surprised to find they are not a good vendor, supplier, or employer.

I’m not even sure how to respond to an old (punk) friend saying “Extremes on both sides are destroying this country.”

cgervasi,
@cgervasi@fosstodon.org avatar

@rasterweb The horseshoe theory is right. Extremists are very similar. Right-wing extremists control a political party, which thankfully isn't that effective because it's more of a personality cult. Left-wing extremists are a fringe minority without much influence in the other party. I just don't want them to figure out how similar they are and start working together toward real non-personality-cult policy goals.

cgervasi,
@cgervasi@fosstodon.org avatar

@rasterweb They both lead to suffering and death, but I have way more understanding of people who intend to make things better than for those who have a sick desire to see people hurt.

cgervasi,
@cgervasi@fosstodon.org avatar

@rasterweb The very extreme cases are Stalin (left) or Hitler (right). Neither one of those is happening right now. With Trump, though, there is a real risk of going in that direction.
If a democratic socialist acted like Trump and controlled a party (totally happening at this time), it would be just as bad.

Americans wondering about the effects of a ban can look to India, which banned TikTok and 200 other Chinese apps in 2020. Most people simply turned to Instagram or YouTube

cgervasi,

@ppatel How did India enforce the ban? It seems like something easy to get around and something that makes it even cooler for kids. Did people really stop using it because the government banned it?

cgervasi,

@ppatel Isn't it trivially easy to install it from an APK file? For almost no effort you get you get to feel like a rebel.

Tech workers when everyone is hiring: lol, I don’t need to unionize. Look how well I negotiated for myself!

Tech workers when there are layoffs everywhere: I don’t have time to unionize! I’m desperate to get a job right now!

@drahardja The last time there were layoffs everywhere in tech was 2002-2003.

cgervasi,

@drahardja That's true. I somehow forgot about 08-09, maybe b/c it was more centered on real estate, although it affected the broader economy.
The economic cycle has a period of around 10 years, with lots of jitter. In times of expansion like this, we need to be mindful that a recession is coming; and vise versa.

cgervasi,
@cgervasi@fosstodon.org avatar

@gsuberland I only thought about it for a minute, but why does it need an SCR? Could that FET be driven by the drain that's connected to the SCR gate? Could the series FET that carries 2.4A be some FET with a low V[Th] and R[DS,on], so getting its gate near 0 doesn't matter?

It's cool you get to work on a nice power circuit like this.

Someone I know posted a blog post and I smacked of being written by AI.

It read like it was just saying the same thing over and over without actually saying anything.

It lacked details and feeling and–dare I say–humanity.

Also, there were no typos. ;)

I confirmed with the person, and said "Since it had your name on it, I assumed your wrote it... until I read it."

I guess I expect my friends to actually have created the things they attach their names to.

The next time you see high gas prices, remember that Exxon posted $9.1 billion in earnings for the third quarter of this year. The money is coming out of consumers’ pockets and going back to Exxon’s wealthy shareholders, to which it gave $8.1 billion in Q3.

Someone asked me what I think is going on with Trump's lawyers attacking the clerk.

Yesterday I said this:

"It's hard to tell what is going on with that. My best guess is that Trump's lawyers are fatigued, know they are losing, and are getting weird and paranoid."

Judge Engoron, who sees it all up close, said there is misogyny.

I just saw a picture of the clerk and I have revised my opinion.

The judge may be right . . .

We talk about wanting professional journalists to ditch Twitter and come to Mastodon.

When they do we need to make them welcome!

@Bing_Chris Twitter is bad, and even if parts of it are good, its owner seems to have some fascist-adjacent ideas and likes the idea of using his platform to promote them.

Mastodon can be used to for anything, including bigotry, but you won't see it if you're on a mainstream instance that blocks offensive content. Mastodon is just better.

Need to point this out.

As a murderer stabbed a Muslim woman named Dr. Talat Khan to death, witnesses report that 17 Texans pulled out their firearms. 17! The murderer stabbed her, stopped to check her pulse, confirmed she was alive, & went back to stabbing her to death.

And 17 "good guys with guns" did nothing.

A reminder that the "good guy with a gun" myth is a propaganda point to sell more guns. It does nothing beyond an anecdote to save lives.

The article makes it sound like they got there too late, not that their weapons were insufficient. It sounds like the guy with the sword scared him off, unfortunately too late. Maybe if people had confronted him immediately without grabbing weapons... it's possible to find better solutions after the emergency is over.
