So, I was just at the dentist, whom I believe to be from some area currently under the Iran-regime, for a scheduled appointment and had to explain that I was very tired due to almost all night direct-following the events leading up to the confirmation of the death of the Butcher of Tehran, President Raisi, to which they shared with me and the nurse that they had followed it on radio news in the car to work "...and I was like WHEEEE!!! throws hands in the air, with widest smile".

Nice to see the people happy for a moment.

Is there no precedent this court will not depart from? We can't have individual states throwing Trump off the ballot because that would be “chaos” but we can have individual states creating and enforcing their own immigration policies as if they were separate countries? How on earth can the court justify this?

There is so much AI generated content farm crap flooding YouTube & other platforms that I am genuinely starting to doubt videos I get recommended. YouTube clearly can't spot what's real and what isn't and increasingly, neither can I. I've now found myself multiple times watching a video and needing minutes to realize I'm watching stolen footage & scripts, AI voices, etc. The scams are getting better and flooding the platform, at terrifying rates:

I think one of the reasons why Mastodon feels like a nicer place than other social media apps is that the technical complexity & federated nature only really attracts idealistic nerds who genuinely want a better internet. I almost never see assholes here, no engagement baiting, nothing. Ironically, this means that IMO any simplification and move towards mainstream appeal will almost automatically jeopardize this. Tough dilemma!

@Techaltar I think another big reason is that moderation is democratized; because (small) instances are community aggregations; Moderators are usually part of that community, and therefore have a stake in the outcomes, rather then just having a policy to apply.
Likewise because instances are analogues for community rather then for a 'civic forum' people need to do less debate and posturing. Again, me beating the drum for more smaller instances with more specialized scopes

Which is why its worrying me that the trend recently is that the number of users is raising but the number of instances is decreasing.

I am glad we have you on-side for advocacy Given the rest of the tech media seems to have adopted the narrative that Fedi is impossibly complex

It's time to address the elephant in the room, or actually Threads

As many of you may know Threads went live in Europe and with that they started testing federation with the Fediverse

At this point there is a choice to make

  1. Block Threads on instance level, that will take away the choice for each person

  2. Do not block and let people block if they want to(1 search and 2 clicks)

After much consideration and talks I think we need to go with option 2 and let people decide for themselves

@stux problem is that threads is mining data from prople interacting with threads users, without any consent mechanism other then a statement in the threads EULA which fedi accounts probably didnt sign.
