@dalekcoffee Blenders automatic weights rigging feature when you parent an armature to a mesh with control+P is surprisingly good. Saves a lot of weight painting time.
A cheat you can do instead of retopologizing the whole thing is use the slice tool to paint new places to bend around.
Another cheat is splitting the mesh into separate problematic parts that wont auto weight properly, then join them together afterwards.

Been on this binge lately so I'm reading and watching all about earthship construction, packed dirt tyre and earthbag walling, thermal mass air conditioning, water retention earthworks and permaculture berms and swales... all without need for electricity.

I'm familiar with passive house engineering but this stuff is fascinating. Rather surprisingly... why aren't we doing it more? That needs to change!

An EU-wide has been adopted by the EU parliament with 584 votes in favour, 3 against and 14 abstentions. The directive now goes to the council and after it is officially published, member states have 24 months to implement it in national law.

And yes, smartphones are included.

So happy to see this!!! Another step toward a sustainable future.

There's so many old appliances with hardware that works completely fine that end up in the trash bin because of moronic software lockouts, built in tamper prevention and all kinds of consumer hostile design.

Apple especiallt takes the cake by hardware locking each individual component with IDs, making them impossible to replace elsewhere than their own repair shops.

Happy Birthday to TESS, NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite.

Launched on April 18, 2018, TESS has since been hunting for exoplanets in our galaxy.

Recently, on April 8, TESS had gone to sleep in "safe mode" due to an anomaly detected by its computer system. At the time of the anomaly, some scheduled engineering activities were taking place 🤔

All is well now, as TESS continues to add to its record of 432 confirmed exoplanets and 7,138 candidates.

@AkaSci Love imagining and reading about different concepts to try and accomplish this.
I think the most feasible is probably mass producing a swarm of spacecraft being launched at regular intervals, somewhat similar to the breakthrough starshot concept.
Having multiple spacecraft in series forming a meshnet as they travel to the focal point they can relay the data back that way.
Decelerating spacecraft that far out and reaching destinations within reasonable time is even more daunting.

There's compelling evidence for lava tubes on the Moon and Mars. We can see their collapsed roofs from space, inviting us to go inside and explore. But it isn't easy to know the true scale of these lava tubes. How big are they, and how far do they extend? It'll not be easy to go inside and explore them, but a new paper suggests that topographic features on the surface of these worlds could hint at the rough internal dimensions of the lava tubes.

@fraser
I hope we get to see a bunch of robots to explore them someday!

I've already imagined a meshnet swarm of robots like Boston Dynamics Spot, navigating difficult terrain and laying cables mostly autonomously. Not getting any sunlight for power, and the long delay from Mars, I wonder if they could emulate antlike behaviors from nature to work in harmony.

All streaming wonderful footage and 3D mapping as they go exploring. :Blobhaj:

Threads API Update 🛜

Over the past few months, we’ve been building the Threads API to enable creators, developers and brands to manage their Threads presence at scale and easily share fresh, new ideas with their communities from their favorite third-party applications.

The API currently enables users to authenticate, publish threads, and fetch the content they posted through these tools – and soon, we will enable reply moderation and insights capabilities.

“Bluesky could be the future of content moderation”.

I 100% disagree.

Yes, the protocol offers a plethora of ways to filter content and ensure you never come across, say, Nazis.

But that’s not what content moderation is. Content moderation is making decisions. It is either welcoming or refusing certain types of content on your platform.

If you’re letting everyone in, and telling your users "but you have control!", you’re not moderating anything. You’re just quitting.

cragsand,
@cragsand@mastodon.social avatar

@nileane
I'm also worried about this. From how it looks now it's gonna be hell when nazis join & more so when they start to federate.

  • Will servers have centralized allowlists or denylists?
  • Can servers have their own rules like the Mastodon covenant?
  • Can servers block other servers?
  • Will doing that remove you from the list?
  • Can you move your account DID to one that blocks bad servers?

Would that work like being on a moderated Mastodon server? So many questions... :AAAAAA:

cragsand,
@cragsand@mastodon.social avatar

@JustinH @nileane If they don't change this model, it's gonna turn into an absolute disaster. I remember reading about this but had hoped they'd actually solved this by now. Seeing as this was almost a year ago.

Server operators must be able to moderate the content they host and link. Not only morally but they have a legal responsibility.

If is as "open" as they claim, it needs server blocking or a fork. Hiding users is not going to work if bad actors can post all kinds of horrors.

cragsand,
@cragsand@mastodon.social avatar

@ekana @nileane
Here's a good post regarding how and the intends to handle moderation once it starts to federate.

I also reply with some concerns I think NEED to be addressed before it starts.

The current system seems to enable harassment since you can hop relays to evade moderation and pile on victims who are unaware that they're even being targeted.
That is, until the amount of people piling on spills over your filter..
