For those who aren’t aware, Microsoft have decided to bake essentially an infostealer into base Windows OS and enable by default.

From the Microsoft FAQ: “Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

Info is stored locally - but rather than something like Redline stealing your local browser password vault, now they can just steal the last 3 months of everything you’ve typed and viewed in one database.

Copilot+ Recall has been enabled by default globally in Microsoft Intune managed users, for businesses.

You need to enable DisableAIDataAnalysis to switch it off. https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/client-management/manage-recall

So…there is a concerted campaign, with Musk as its mouthpiece, to discredit Signal and get people to switch to Telegram. It’s disinformation, but there’s also useful information in it. The useful information is that a hideous, powerful, right-wing crank — or whoever’s yanking his chain — really, really wants people to use Telegram.

We’ve long known Telegram’s security is weak. But now, in light of this new information, we should move forward assuming that Telegram is actively compromised.

If the sky is dark where you are GO OUT NOW AND WATCH AN AMAZING AURORA!!! Northern Hemisphere or Southern Hemisphere get out now! Clouds marred the view before dawn at Hoopers Inlet in Dunedin NZ but the aurora was still incredible!

But then, after 15 minutes, just when we wanted to leave and go to bed, we saw some huge columns of white light appear. Much larger than I expected.

To be fair, the photos look much more awesome colorwise than what we saw. The colors were really faint, the light looked mostly just white. But the size of it was impressive nevertheless.

Crazy, I never would have thought that I'd see an aurora in Switzerland...

Pink sky behind a fir tree.
Faint pink streaks in the night sky. Some stars are visible too.
More pink and green light.

@dbrgn Amazing photos! The current solar storm is giving these amazing Auroras pretty far south. It's late at night here in southern Sweden and unfortunately very overcast and cloudy so no luck for me at this time. 😊

I can't believe a paid OS needs a tool like this. Here's a GUI tool called OFGB (Oh Frick Go Back) to remove all the ads in Windows 11. It's understandable if a free OS or app needs ad support, but this is just crazy https://github.com/xM4ddy/OFGB

An EU-wide #RightToRepair has been adopted by the EU parliament with 584 votes in favour, 3 against and 14 abstentions. The directive now goes to the council and after it is officially published, member states have 24 months to implement it in national law.

And yes, smartphones are included. #ThanksEU

Happy Birthday to TESS, NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite.

Launched on April 18, 2018, TESS has since been hunting for exoplanets in our galaxy.

Recently, on April 8, TESS had gone to sleep in "safe mode" due to an anomaly detected by its computer system. At the time of the anomaly, some scheduled engineering activities were taking place 🤔

All is well now, as TESS continues to add to its record of 432 confirmed exoplanets and 7,138 candidates.

What kind of telescope can possibly image the surface of exoplanets, given their small size and large distance?

Our best telescopes on land and in space won't cut it. Scientists have studied the Solar Gravilty Lens (SGL) based telescope, where the Sun's gravity bends light and acts as a gigantic lens. The focal point of the lens is 550 AU away and will require a swarm of telescopes lined up along that line. Not feasible today, but some day ..

How much does a solar eclipse dim daylight on Mars?

The animation shows #Curiosity's capture of a solar eclipse by Phobos on March 25, 2019 (Sol 2358). Phobos is small and does not fully cover the disk of the sun, so dimming is noticeable but not comparable to that of a total eclipse on Earth.
