As I look through all the social networks (except Meta's), I ask myself what value-added people get from them. I know on Mastodon, I can count on some interesting things coming by on most days. Two of the places I visit are so echo chamber-y, I assume people feel their rants matter, but they don't. I just can't hang out long at a place without word filters. Even Twitter is tolerable with those! To see, day after day, same US election propaganda is intolerable. I already know who I vote for.

@cragsand@mastodon.social avatar

@randulo moderation bots who don't understand context are becoming the new norm for content creator platforms. On YouTube you can no longer utter the following phrase:

"I hate men"

Even jokingly, or if you're a man, you automatically get a community guidelines strike when it's picked up by speech to text. Multiple content creator friends who do roleplay, acting or banter while gaming have been hit.

Appealing should get a human to review, but all I've seen have been denied so I doubt it.

I'm having a conversation with a designer about icons. Making a screenreader read "camera" or "microphone" when an icon is shown is trivial with aria-label. But screenreader users are massively outnumbered by sighted users who might be confused by the meaning of a tiny image/ icon. The mighty Paul Annett explains more:

cragsand,
@cragsand@mastodon.social avatar

@brucelawson I miss when icons used to be detailed and colorful before the whole corporate "minimalist" design spread like a virus. Now logos are so minimalist that you can hardly tell what anyone means any more and they all look the same.

While the initial impact is said to be loss of availability, it remains to be seen if some confidential information has been stolen as well.

cragsand,
@cragsand@mastodon.social avatar

@CupofDalek I'm all for more social VR platforms but hopping on the NFT and crypto train is a huge big nope - NFT - NO FUCKING THANKS - for me.

Monetization for creations is good, like VRChat implemented a currency system to help creators. It has to be done respectfully though with actual legit business practices that do benefit creators.

Not wasteful grifts that just lines the pockets of crypto hodlers who are gonna rugpull and disappear at the first chance they can.

cragsand,
@cragsand@mastodon.social avatar

@CupofDalek Using cryptography for virtual currency is fine. When I say "crypto" I mean using proof-of-work (waste of energy) or proof-of-stake (profit for thieves) blockchains in distributed ledgers.

Trust-less systems only benefit criminals. The argument that they're trust-less in the first place is an oxymoron as any large enough movement can 51% attack or fork.

Here's a great read about how byzantine fault tolerance makes decentralized cryptocurrency doomed to fail.

When retailers added self-checkout the expectation was that it would save them money by offloading work to customers.

In practice they now have to worry about theft and or helping customers with ID checks for booze. Many now consider it a wash.

I honestly wonder if a similar thing will happen with adoption of generative AI. Will some businesses find it takes just as much or more work to review the output of AIs than to just have humans do it?

https://www.bbc.com/worklife/article/20240111-it-hasnt-delivered-the-spectacular-failure-of-self-checkout-technology

cragsand, (edited )
@cragsand@mastodon.social avatar

@carnage4life The supermarket checkouts used by Coop and ICA here in Sweden use a different system with charged handheld scanning devices you pick up when entering.

These allow you to pack groceries directly into your own bags in the store. When checking out only a % of customers get screened which is handled by staff so you only have to wait. These are much faster than both weighing & normal checkouts.

Drawback is you have to register personal membership cards.

What is a sense? No really, I've been asking myself that. Is a sense only something you have a specific organ for, or can a sense be learned / deducted through other senses, and can you still call that a sense or is it something else?

Here's what I mean:

You can hear. That is one of the commonly known senses. However, can you "feel" gravitation / gravity? Sure, you cannot feel gravitational waves directly, but neither can you hear sound waves. You have a tiny eardrum swinging to the vibrations of sound waves moving (through) the air sending an electrical signal into your head which you perceive as sound.

If you feel your own weight, that is a result of the gravitational pull of the object of mass (usually a planet) below you. If you go to a different object of mass, earth's moon for example, you can noticeably feel the difference in gravity through feeling lighter.

Is that a sense? Can one argue that humans can sense gravity, even though that "sense" isn't given through a specific organ but rather existing organs already providing different senses (touch)?

What are your opinions on this, is this just an argument about semantics or can senses be something you have no specific organ for?

Also, to take this even further:
What if you modify yourself/your body? Can you then learn or acquire a new skill? There is a good video about magnet implants where people claim to have developed a new sense for magnetism, that their brain was able to pick up the distinct input from those magnets through the sensation of touch and movement and interpret it as a sense of magnetism.

And maybe, just maybe to take it into this entirely new direction: what about sensing someone else's emotions? I'm more on the fence about this than I am about the other things mentioned in my post, but could you call that a sense, even if it is something you have to learn? Through the "real" sense of vision you can observe someone, however, to observe that person's emotions requires a skill of interpretation. Some people are very good at noticing someone's "aura", their "vibe", or whether something is wrong, whilst other stay oblivious to those social cues. Would you consider that a sense or is that stretching the definition too much?

Sometimes people say "you have a good sense for things like this", or "you have a good sense of humor" which is really just a wrong usage of the word, I just want to use these sentences to highlight how broad the spectrum is of what we define as a "sense".

What do you think? Do we have a sense of gravity, or do we just feel resistance and interpret that as gravity? Does that already classify as a sense, or is it something else?

If you have any insight on the matter, please help me on this - I feel like I just unlearned what a sense is.

cragsand,
@cragsand@mastodon.social avatar

@ErikUden All depends on the definition you agree on. The established traditional definition isn't the same as the biological scientific definition. The traditional one is predefined knowledge taught as "the five senses". From a scientific point of view we have a lot more senses with different definitions. Some nerves can sense hot and cold separately for example which isn't the same as "touch". Practical examples of these being stimulated by chemicals are chili (hot) and menthol (cold).

cragsand,
@cragsand@mastodon.social avatar

@ErikUden Expanding senses to understanding concepts is an interesting perspective. For example I have a "sense" to understand English and Swedish, programming logic and math, but I don't have any sense at all for speaking French or Chinese. It's contrary to the traditional definition but not necessarily incorrect as long you you define what you mean. At least that's my thought as I'm trying to sleep :BlobHajMlem:
