There are some who call me—Tim.

My grandson Quinn. His dodgeball team are called the Cheeto Puffs. His friend Dominic came up with the idea for the tutus. These kids today.

They made it to the championship. We’ll see if they prevail in all their orange dust glory.

"When the Israelis pick up guns, or the Poles, or the Irish, or any white man in the world says, “Give me liberty or give me death,” the white world applauds.

“When a Black man says the same thing he's judged a criminal. And everything possible is done to make an example of this bad nigger so there won't be any more like him."

— James Baldwin.

Kalief Browder was sent to Riker’s Island, the infamous NYC jail when he was 16 and spent nearly three years in prison for allegedly stealing a backpack, which he always denied. Two of the three years were spent in solitary. He never even went to trial. He was eventually released. He killed himself in 2015, a result of the trauma.

But sure, give Trump every benefit of the doubt.

If young voters are disenchanted with Biden because they don’t think he’s done enough, they’re in for a real treat under a fascist regime that destroys democracy in America, once and for all.

Let’s see how that works out for social justice, minority rights, sane foreign policy, or battling climate change.

It’s an old white guy now or old white supremacists forever. Read a history book.

We’re playing with live ammo, folks.

The case for Joe Biden is not that he’s the second coming of John F Kennedy or even a decent follow-up to Obama. He’s not exciting. He’s not young. He’s not bubbling with fresh ideas and eager to disrupt the world order. He’s an old guy who’s been around the sun a few times and, consequently, has seen some shit that turned his hair white.

Why are prices still high on many things?

Because corporations realized they could raise prices and keep them there and it would be blamed on inflation or politics and not corporate greed. People would buy their products anyway and blame others for their loss.

Here are your options.

Biden gave a speech on remembering the Holocaust. Trump fell asleep listening to a porn star testify about having unprotected sex with him while he was married with a young child at home.

Those are your options.

I think starting over on any new platform can be difficult, and Mastodon is decidedly a bit more DIY than others. But once you build a little community here, it’s like the others, only better. Definitely less bullshit here, and still a bubble, but one of your own making.

The difference is, you can’t assume the world is here, because it’s not. Just this weird cross section of people who have found it.

An accidental community of seekers.

Of course the workers repairing potholes on a bridge in the middle of the night were immigrants. Of course they were working to support their families. Of course they were. A ship took out the bridge and now they’re dead.

This was shot in Rochester, NY by the sister of a guy who works for my brother. IDK, some woman in Rochester.

Anyway, that’s pretty dramatic. At our house it was more like a big cloud went overhead.

I do not support Israel’s war on civilians. I do not support my country’s support of that genocide. But what I’m not going to do is fuck myself and everyone else in the world by formulating some sort of protest vote against a president who nothing if not decent. Why would I do that? So ALL the authoritarians can win?!

Some of this is about what happens here, as well. Or would you prefer to experience Gaza here at home?

You have to ask yourself who is doing more harm. Fox News, where everyone already knows they’re the unofficial media arm of the GOP? Or CNN, where they pretend to be giving you objective journalism balanced between two equal parties playing by the same rules?

I’d argue that CNN poses the greater threat to democracy.

I seriously miss buying the paper.

Remember that? Unless you had it delivered, which was also awesome, you had to go somewhere and buy one. A goddamn newspaper. It was a treasure map of unexpected information.

Sundays were like Christmas. Book reviews and magazines. Comics and world affairs. It was intoxicating. I used to buy a Sunday paper and go to the beach with coffee. Sit and read the paper alone with the gulls.

I’m so sick of people complaining about paying for other people’s work. Literature. Journalism. Music. Films. If you’re not paying for it, you’re stealing it.

It’s bullshit.

Why is it “an obscure clause” NYT? It’s pretty straightforward in both meaning and intent. It’s only been unused because past candidates (since the Civil War) haven’t been engaged in insurrection against the government or refused to leave office.

A reminder that modern elections are won through turnout not by turning the other side. Yes, messaging is critical but not because you’re trying to convince your opponent that you have a better plan. It’s convincing your own side that the election is important enough to warrant their attention.

I’m ready for some good news.

Maybe a large judgement against Trump, or Putin gets assasinated by his own security. Matt Gaetz is arrested for child porn, or Stephen Miller is hit by a bus full of immigrants. The possibilities are endless.

Come on, Karma! Baby needs a new pair of shoes. Let’s roll!

Think about it. If you were obscenely wealthy, would you really have any self-interest in democracy? Of course not. Which is why it’s antithetical to democracy to allow money to infect politics. If we survive, we must make difficult decisions barring those with wealth from having undue influence in how we govern ourselves. The would be oligarchs must be shut out.

My wife and are still shocked each day at how early it gets dark. Like it snuck up on us and we haven’t been dealing with this our entire lives.

“We wouldn’t be off the beach yet,” she exclaims. “Now, I’m taking a bath and ready for bed.”

I have been really valuing the responses I've gotten to my getting old post. I wonder if we should hashtag future discussions? Anyone got ideas? How about something like ? I dunno- that's not terribly catchy...hmmmm
