The ubiquitous lime green COVID tests may not be as accurate as first believed. There are allegations that the supplier may have excluded important test data when submitting to Health Canada.

Its poor efficacy on medium & low viral loads has led to experts warning people to only trust it if it provides a positive reading but don't trust it if it provides a negative reading.

The US NHTSA has issued a recall on every Tesla vehicle sold in the US with the Autopilot feature installed. Calling the feature a safety hazard as it can be too easily misused due to inadequate driver monitoring.

The safety recall requires Tesla to perform a software update on all affected vehicles that will force drivers to monitor the vehicle more closely.

No word if a similar recall will be made in Canada.

First they unceremoniously remove people's purchased Discovery content on their PlayStations, now they're just randomly banning some PSN accounts.

Hopefully this is just a bug and Sony reverse these bans soon, but this is not a good look.

deltatux,

@GhostOnTheHalfShell Sorry not sure which post you're referring to. This was just something reported in the media where Sony seems to have banned some PSN accounts without reason.

A driver from Caledon was pulled over in Brampton for going 100 km/h over the speed limit. His excuse to the officer? He needed to use the washroom ...smh lol.

https://toronto.citynews.ca/2023/11/29/driver-speeding-bathroom-excuse-brampton-peel-police/

deltatux,

@kkarhan lol, that is one expensive piss because in Province of Ontario, going over 50 km/h over the speed limit is considered "street racing". Not only did this fool get a ticket, but his/her license was suspended for 30 days & car impounded for 2 weeks on the spot.

If convicted, driver is considered a "high risk driver". That part of Toronto has some of the most expensive insurance rates already, this idiot is gonna need to pay ~$1k/month for insurance going forward just because of this...

@AnnaAnthro I mean we do have options out there. Problem is that most Canadians seem to still gravitate towards the Big 6 banks regardless of cost & then complain about it.

For those looking to get free banking accounts, look to options like EQ Bank, Motusbank, Simplii Financial and Tangerine Bank. Yes, the last 2 are owned/part of the Big 6 but are free.

There's also other options like your local credit union as well, do check them out as well 🙂!

With the large push to RISC-V in the Android ecosystem, especially with Qualcomm putting RISC-V on wearables, what's the chances of that rumoured fully customized Pixel chip be RISC-V based instead of ARM? Could be wild but would be cool.

I second Meridian, really like their customer service. However, I'm really not a fan of their updated account fee structure (as of Sept 1), they're not that competitive with the new fee structure as it kinda copies the Big Banks but w/ less features incl.

Depending on what your needs are, Alterna Savings & DUCA may offer you a better deal. Though I can't vouch of their customer service as I haven't used Alterna much & haven't used DUCA before.

    deltatux,

@avidamoeba not sure if that's DUCA but definitely that was PACE. Severe mismanagement & potential fraud from leadership caused many years of issues at the CU. FSRAO ended up ordering its closure and sold it to Alterna Savings.

    deltatux,

@Inky online banks have their place, so too do credit unions. It also depends on what credit union you're comparing with. Some CUs provide free accounts like the online banks but still have the option to get either free or PAYG branch access for the times where branches can resolve things faster.

If all you want is a no frills banking experience, online banks are great but CUs still fill a role that can't be found with the Big Banks either. Really depends on what your needs are really.

The Government of Canada has awarded Sun Life Assurance Company, a $15 million contract to lay the groundwork for the upcoming Canada Dental Benefit.

The new dental program is expected to launch in the fall of 2023 & is expected to provide coverage to families making less than $90k/year. Those making less than $70k/year will not have co-pays.

A recent study published in the journal Science found that humans were nearly wiped out in an "ancestral bottleneck" event 800,000 years ago. This event lasted nearly 120,000 years before the population recovered.

During this time period, it was estimated that there were only roughly 1280 breeding individuals during this time period.

I still find old-Twitter and better than for news, events, and info, but mastodon better than either for fostering medium-length convos. Just me?

Or are there for using mastodon I'm still not up on? I follow hashtags and ppl, use lists, and try to look at who my followds follow

If you're an instance admin, consider by @g3rv4. It's a nifty tool that lets you pull from servers you specify even if you don't have much interactions with it.

    https://github.com/g3rv4/GetMoarFediverse

Another tool is called Fedi Buzz Relay: https://relay.fedi.buzz/

If you're using or , they have the bubble/recommended timeline where the admin can import timelines from select instances & show it to their users.

    Hope this helps!

According to iPhone users, once you switch to the iPhone, there's no going back to Android.

    Is it true? 🤔

    deltatux,

    @nixCraft

I have a work iPhone & personal Android device. I cannot see myself switching to an iPhone for my personal device, there are some things that simply drives me insane with an iPhone.

The stock keyboard is one of the worst virtual keyboards I've ever used, it doesn't have a universal back button, Apple Maps still suck for navigation (at least for my area), the app drawer & notification centre implementation is horrible and etc.

Hardware is great, iOS just doesn't work for me...

ABC News from Australia published a great documentary about Canada's worst wildfire season earlier today. It's a great in-depth look at the effort to combat wildfire & the impacts it has had on local communities from an International lens.

While Canadian broadcasters are currently busy posting important updates, this gives better context of all the hard work & hardships people are facing.

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CrDi0AXASMc

    deltatux,

A stark statistics that has gotten lost in all the talk about the wildfire is that 5% of the Canadian population is indigenous but indigenous communities account for more than 42% of fire evacuations this year.

Looks like after Twitter/X announced that they're removing blocks, BlueSky experienced a surge of signups (even with the invite system), causing the site to now implement rate limits to ensure stability.

Unlike Twitter's rate limit, BlueSky's rate limits isn't designed to cap how many posts one can view.

(This plug is also often used for EV charging, supporting 9.6 kW continuously)

    deltatux,

Oh most definitely, these things are chonkers but must be handled with care. Preferably if you need to clean out your electric stove/range, it's always safest to turn it off at the breaker temporarily.... but you know, we're all lazy & don't do that, so one really needs to be careful.

This year is by far the worst year for wildfire in Canada, it is simply staggering. There are currently over 1000 wildfires burning, with over ⅔ considered "out of control", over 134k km² burned.

The wildfire season started 2 months early & wildfire season is only about over half way done.

    Just look at that chart..

Simply put: "This has been - by some distance - the worst wildfire season in Canada's history."

Province of British Columbia has issued a province-wide state of emergency due to the rapidly growing wildfire near Kelowna. The wildfire grew from 64 hectares to 6800 hectares in just 24 hrs & is still growing rapidly.

More than 4800 people are under evacuation orders with >23k people under evacuation alerts.

The airspace around Kelowna has been shutdown, giving priority to firefighting efforts.

For those evacuating Yellowknife, it's a long gruelling journey to the next major city which is Edmonton. Edmonton is over 1400km away & takes over 14 hrs to get to on a good day. When everyone's trying to evacuate on the only road out, it takes much longer & resources are scarce.

To put it into context, it's like driving from NYC to Florida with only 1 route available & not much nearby.
