Yesterday, April 22, 2024 we hosted a #criticalmass bike ride in #Yellowknife#NWT to show support for #activetransportation infrastructure changes. Yellowknife is only about 8 km from end to end. We shouldn't feel obligated to drive our cars everywhere, but our bike route network is incomplete and not reliably maintained. Over 100 people joined the ride to say they want their travel habits to be healthier, cheaper, safer, greener, and more joyful. Not bad for a city with a total population of around 20,000.
Check out the video! (I couldn't upload it directly to Mastodon, anyone else having that problem?) #BikeTooter
A war thousands of miles away is causing heartache in #Yellowknife.
Rami Kassem, a #Palestinian#Canadian who lives in Yellowknife, used to have regular Whatsapp phone calls with family in #Gaza but said he hasn't heard from them in over a month. When this happens, Kassem says there are only a few possible reasons for why — and none are good.
This is from a walk, yesterday, around Frame Lake in #Yellowknife, #NWT. The city kind of surrounds Frame Lake, but they maintain an awesome trail loop all the way around. It's fully accessible on one side and more rough and natural on the other. It's beautiful, but be sure to keep your cheeks covered because it was about -35°C with the wind-chill!
In #Yellowknife, #Indigenous people make up about 28% of the city population but about 95% of the #unhoused population. For the past week, temperatures have been one side or the other of -40C with wind chill making it one side or the other of -50C. #colonialViolence#Housing#Canada
Yes, Canada is still on fire. Even though summer has gone by and the traditional wildfire season is over, hundreds of forest fires continue burning, most of them out of control.
This is intensely sad to me, not to mention frightening, and it’s a blatantly ominous sign that we are in the midst of a climate emergency.
Never been to #BurningMan, never been sad about it.
Let's just say: no artist could create an installation that more effectively destroys the internal logic of the whole fucking thing, than driving hundreds of miles to bulldoze a climate protest so you can party in the middle of the desert, in the same summer where hundreds were murdered & poisoned by smoke in #Lahaina & #Yellowknife & across the #PacNW.
p.s. Great job calling in daddy sheriff to drive his giant government-funded patrol vehicle over the #ClimateCrisis protest, so you could drive your private car/RV into one of the most sensitive ecosystems in the world.
"when onlookers realized it was a climate protest, many quickly became incensed, huffing back to their cars frustrated at the inconvenience...."I don’t care what their argument is, they can go fuck themselves”
"How do you not see the climate change that now burns at our very doorstep? How is it you STILL seek to throw MORE fuel onto that fire? Even if you cared only for money how do you support the hobbling of a profitable industry Albertans do very well at?"
meanwhile in #yellowknife on the ingraham trail fire/ZF011
an incredible #wildfire crew dropping liquid fire in order to backburn away from the retardant line (area bathed in red)
[edit: just asked my uncle, who is a retired bird-dog officer - that's gelled gasoline ("napalm") coming out. they also sometimes use ping pong balls of potassium permanganate injected with glycol, which lands on the forest floor and self-ignites.]
Delays in people finding out news on #Canadian#wildfires
could cost lives as towns, remote areas need to be evacuated. Often people first hear #news items/alerts/updates via social media.
Firefighters have kept wildfires at bay near the capital of Canada’s Northwest Territories as well as a threatened city in British Columbia, though no one is claiming victory as forecasters warn that drier and windier weather is coming #AureFreePress#News#Canada#kelowna#GlobalWarming#climatechange#yellowknife
When you vote for someone whose only plan for #ClimateChange is to get rid of the #CarbonTax, eventually those wildfires, all that smoke & increasingly whole Canadian cities getting burnt to slag? It's on you. You did that. Stop.
@thomasfuchs Someone here mentioned yesterday for our American cousins: the 1000s leaving #Yellowknife for #Edmonton are driving the equivalent of NYC to Fort Lauderdale.
