Remember all the times Elon Musk said Tesla is so amazing for the environment? The company is being sued for violating the Clean Air Act hundreds of times in recent years by emitting harmful pollutants from its Fremont factory into nearby neighborhoods.

eagerpebble,
@eagerpebble@vivaldi.net avatar

@parismarx We have got to find a way to stop people and companies who can rack up 112 air pollution violations in 5 years and be sued by 25 separate local governments for pollution.

It's truly astounding that people who were caught with some marijuana 3 times are in prison for life (and they shouldn't be), but a corporation that is killing people faces no noticeable accountability.

One of my classes has their final projects due at 11:59pm tonight and the ramp-up of more and more frantic student emails is really depressing.

They had to choose topics in February and turn in drafts in March, and yet it seems that most of them didn't actually start until today...not that I was any better as an undergrad, but man it hurts to watch!

Lots of intelligent people talk about through the lens of history and understanding how it's taken over and functioned in the past. That's good and useful.

At the same time, we can see a bunch of small town assholes speed running the authoritarian playbook every day. Case in point: the (unelected) city manager of , Washington. This guy's got it all:

Stirring up hate against a particular demographic? ✅

Using state sponsored violence against those people? ✅

Aggressively attacking political opponents? ✅

Attacking media that is critical of the policies? ✅

Breaking laws and contracts while blaming others for the same? ✅

Hiding information from the public that they have a right to know? ✅

Replacing community-trusted advisors with like-minded, unqualified replacements? ✅

I could go on...but you can also just read about it: https://publicola.com/2024/04/12/burien-city-manager-demands-removal-of-police-chief-who-wont-arrest-people-for-being-homeless/

The point being, we don't even need history to see how this will play out on a national and international scale. It's happening in small towns all over the place at high speed.

eagerpebble,
@eagerpebble@vivaldi.net avatar

It's also worth noting that this town is such a nowhere place, that our local fake news (@TheNeedling) joked that it doesn't even exist.

Everyone keeps sending me that news article about the German railway trying to hire a DOS and Windows 3.1 expert. You don’t understand- that is my whole job. That’s literally my normal day to day cybersecurity career.

eagerpebble,

@hacks4pancakes oh yes. My life as an infra engineer using AWS is just repeatedly asking the questions:

  1. You put what in the production account?!
  2. So how much do we REALLY trust AWS?
  3. Why are we giving AWS so much money while we build like we're running on a server under our desk?

Please I implore you,
do not require candidates create an account to apply for an open position.

Candidates often apply to hundreds of places before finding a right fit. Can you imagine having to create a hundred accounts that you will never use after just for that? This is a real data privacy nightmare for them, and for you too!

Please don't.

@Em0nM4stodon Honestly wondering here: is there a platform that does this other than workday? I went through two job searches last year, and workday applications are the only ones I remember making me do this.

For those of us who can exert some influence over our company's recruiting practices, let us know what other platforms suck so we can push back.

If a cisgender person gets upsetti spaghetti because you used the Latin prefix cis- to describe them, I think the best thing to do is comply with their request and use the Greek synonyms homo- (same) and hetero- (different) instead.

It's really hard to overstate how little your actions 50+ years ago mean when you are actively arguing with the lived experience of a trans woman on the internet. I honestly can't fathom how tiring this must be for her.

Plenty of cis and straight people have been participating in the joke of the post you are taking issue with. The problem here isn't language or who posted it. The problem is you.

One of the more limiting things about Signal is you have to give out your mobile number to everyone. Even if it is a burner, I still don't want to advertise to the world that it's mine.

Was happy to read today that Signal is now beta testing a new username feature.

I have a very long zoom meeting this afternoon that I have to do from my campus office, and I remembered to bring knitting needles with me but I FORGOT YARN. So I'm going to be very un-focused during this meeting 😭

eagerpebble,
@eagerpebble@vivaldi.net avatar

@sundogplanets I was effectively working remotely years before the pandemic started. I always ensured that there was a break every hour for long meetings, just like when I was in person. I feel like everyone else forgot about this practice when the pandemic hit. Luckily, I now work at a company that encourages everyone to end meetings 5-10 minutes before the hour or half hour. Still, those long meetings are brutal without regular breaks.

So when I was in graduate school in 1993 and you wanted to compile a latex manuscript on an IBM 386 processer, you hit the button and went to get a cup of coffee. Five or ten minutes later, it would be done.

These days it happens in the blink of an eye.

So why is it that in 2023 basically every manuscript submission system in existance takes at least 10 minutes to latex a file?

Funny story similar to that:

Many, many years ago, Amazon had a system that let customers upload user manuals for items. It stopped working one day. It took weeks or months for someone to notice. It took longer to figure out why. The entire ingestion system was run on some engineer's desktop. When he left, IT took the machine and wiped it.

They decided to just remove the feature instead of trying to fix it.
