"They’ve already laid claim to our collective land, labor and attention. With AI, they want to own our thoughts and the last shred of agency that comes with them. If we fail to defend our personal sovereignty at this juncture, a dark age of the corporate singularity awaits us."

Do not misconceive of a ‘social construct’ as something that isn’t real.

Make the mistake of disregarding our social reality as a way to circumvent it, and you will find yourself banging your head against the very real walls of sociality until you go mad.

Once you accept the reality of our social constructs you will see they can only be deconstructed and made anew by the collective imagination of our socialized power.

Back in high school, I made some kind of mistake that a teacher scolded me for.

(It’s also quite possible that it wasn’t me who got scolded in this particular instance, but rather I was just empathizing with a fellow student.)

The teacher said “Do you know why I was so hard on you just now? Because this way, the shock of this harsh lesson will make you remember it forever.”

Well, it’s been almost two decades and all that remains with me is the feeling of being yelled at for getting it wrong.

Partially in response to the excellent juxtaposition of Effective Altruism/Accelerationism by @molly0xfff, @pluralistic writes:

“But the superintelligence true-believers and their criti-hyping critics keep dragging us away from these important questions [about pro-social automation] and into fanciful and pointless discussions of whether and how to appease the godlike computers we will create when we disassemble the solar system and turn it into computronium.”

Amen! 🙏

@stormcauldron yeah, they are right to worry about AI overlords because that’s the only kind of AGI they can imagine.

The only systems they know how to make are based on authoritarian control.

They simply cannot conceive of a harmoniously symbiotic relationship between human beings and AI tools that extend our abilities and capacity for cooperation, the same way localized utilities like fire pits, hammers and books have.

You know I was resenting every second of the time I had to read anything written by the TESCREAL bundle but it really did help me clarify how they’re getting so many young people into their cults and the ways in which what I want from technology is the complete opposite of them.

@timnitGebru what makes their message compelling for young people?

Whatever it is, we need to tell an even better, pro-social story.

@photomatt & co have talked about making Tumblr fully open source for a long time. In light of Tumblr’s downsizing, this is the time to do so!

Since it’s failing to make a profit they may as well release it for the wider internet community to go nuts with it.

Better yet, spin Tumblr out as a standalone co-op venture to succeed or fail on its own merits.

There are quite a few people on who post something along the lines of:

Usually, everyone complains about “the algorithm”, but in this case, people are seeking it out.

@J12t this would actually work for them (and the platform, as a service) if only they could actually talk to their algorithm!

It's been almost a week since I started describing my work in the devlog. I'm okay with the progress and the pace I've set for myself. There’s a major convergence of OAuth/OIDC support across applications, is going all-in on it as its root default, and other social web protocols are tagging along as well.

Like the separation of church and state, it seems prudent to keep the management of our digital identities separate from our social network servers.

Domain-based OIDC accounts with web sign-in, especially when self-hosted, serve the function of a minimum-viable

https://socialhub.activitypub.rocks/t/autonomous-identity-for-the-pluriverse-based-on-oauth-oidc/3675?u=erlend_sh

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@jenniferplusplus sure. On the plus side, this isn’t so much an addition to the fediverse as it is a minor reconfiguration of the status quo.

A proof of concept can be put together by a single developer.

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@silverpill I don’t think you read my proposal if that’s what you’re taking away from this.

Web sign-in (like IndieAuth) by OIDC is the antidote to the auth-monopoly of the megacorps.

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@hueso it’s what a lot of other things do, but none of those are already widely implemented across most fediverse apps, which OIDC is. It’s an already adopted standard, not a new thing that would take years of advocacy and coordination.

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@jaxter184 We need something like IndieAuth, I.e. ‘web sign-in’. But IndieAuth is an extension of OAuth that predates OIDC and is not compatible with it. Mastodon already supports its own form of ‘web sign-in’, and this too is a custom thing rather than IndieAuth exactly.

Are you familiar with the extensions to AP, for federating software forges?

If only we had the tools necessary to measure the likes of Common Sense, Basic Decency and Democratic Speech in discourse at scale

(say, top 1 million most signal-boosted posts per week),

I have no doubt the would handily outscore every other social network out there, especially Twitter/X.

We’re by no means saints here, but unlike the big-corp platforms we can quite reliably demonstrate our network’s non-complicity in genocides and fascist uprisings.

Let’s keep it that way.

erlend,
@erlend@writing.exchange avatar

@gabor .. I’ve no doubt you’ll embark on the journey of a lifetime!

It’s possible to make a living by building fediverse products, but it doesn’t follow the playbook you were schooled in.

Most importantly you just gotta continue this openness streak you’re on. Tell your peers what you are building and why, see what resonates and go from there. Don’t try to be ‘first to market’. Be ‘first to novel value-add’.

Always happy to talk more on these subjects 😊
