According to Federated Social Network Service/System (SNS) History, the term "Fediverse" was coined on 2012-05-25. Long before #ActivityPub... just sayin'.

"Note that Recall does not perform content moderation. It will not hide information such as passwords or financial account numbers."

The computer, however, will stop you from recording DRM'd content.

Find it fascinating that when faced with drawing safety and security boundaries, the primary beneficiary is not the owner of the device, or the person using it, but random corporations who control the intellectual property rights.

The system doesn't work for you.

One thing I find sad is that a lot if folms treated VR as just another tech fad and ditched it for crypto when that became the fad. Now a bunch of the same folks are following AI. Especially sad when fad chading meant ditching code and community for the next best thing only to abandon it again. It feels like the fad chasing means the fad in question doesn't get a fair chance to actually accomplish it's potential.

For more than a year, policy makers have been worried about the consequences of AI getting too powerful.

But it’s time to start worrying about the consequences of AI staying as dumb it currently is.

By the way, do you have a personal website and does it have a home page? (I’m pretty sure it does… 😁)

I would love to know: what’s on your “home” and why?

Feel free to share a link, of course. 🤗 As always, I’m also asking on behalf of my newsletter subscribers.

Several of the major social media platforms - Instagram, TikTok, LinkedIn, Twitter - have effectively declared war on linking to things and I absolutely hate it

"Link in my bio" / "Link in thread" / "Link in first comment"... or increasingly no link at all, just an unsourced screenshot of a page

73% of mothers with kids under 18 are in the workforce. More than flowers or brunch, working moms need:

  • Paid family leave
  • Equal pay
  • Universal childcare

(But get your mom flowers, too)

@Codeberg @maegul @drewdevault I'd argue that a forum with Q&A functionality is already most of what SO is.

So NodeBB can do that with the Q&A plugin, and we're moving towards federation.

How long does a post take to federate to other servers?

TLDR: 8.6 seconds on average

At least as of about 7:30 EST today with a few servers under 1 and a few over 30 seconds.

Read more here: https://stefanhayden.com/blog/2024/05/10/mastodon-federation-speed-test/

Run your own test with this code: https://github.com/stefanhayden/mastodon-federation-speed-test/tree/main

I have been beating this drum for a half dozen years now (links in the post to prove it!) but I will keep beating it: if you are giving a talk, it should work 100% without slides. At their best, slides are “progressive enhancement.” https://v5.chriskrycho.com/journal/progressively-enhanced-talks/
